The recall involves Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc., a wholesale distributor based in Brooklyn, New York. The company initiated the action after testing by state agricultural officials identified potential bacterial contamination in the imported seafood.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) subsequently published an updated company announcement to clarify which product was being recalled. The distinction matters because an earlier report described a different seafood assortment, with separate identifying information and distribution details.
FDA Identifies Recalled Salmon Packages and Affected States
According to the FDA’s updated recall announcement, the affected product is Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced, sold in vacuum-sealed plastic packages weighing 227 grams, or 8 ounces.
The salmon originated in Latvia and was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The FDA announcement identifies the product as frozen, providing several details consumers can use to check their purchases. The recalled packages carry UPC code 4751048940099, lot number D080-148 and a best-before date of November 27, 2027.
The company issued an update to its October 9 announcement specifically to clarify the correct recalled product. Its revised notice identifies sliced Norwegian salmon rather than a combination of different smoked fish varieties.
An October 15 report by South Carolina Public Radio described a Starfish Seafood Trio containing cold-smoked salmon, halibut and trout. That report listed South Carolina among the affected states and provided a different lot number, D139149161-153, and expiration date of December 1, 2027.
The FDA’s updated company announcement instead identifies the Norwegian salmon product and the six states listed above. These distinctions are relevant when consumers compare package labels with the official recall information.
Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. confirmed that it distributed the affected seafood but did not manufacture it. The company has notified affected customers and requested that they stop selling and distributing the recalled packages.
Listeria Contamination Raises Health Concerns for Vulnerable Consumers
The recall follows product sampling conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which identified potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. According to the FDA, this bacterium can cause serious infections, particularly among young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. In some cases, infections can be fatal.
Healthy individuals may experience temporary symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Infection during pregnancy can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
The company is cooperating with state agricultural officials and the FDA as the recall proceeds. Its wholesale customers have been instructed to identify remaining inventory and notify their own customers where appropriate.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled salmon, according to the company’s announcement. Consumers who purchased the affected product are advised not to eat it. They should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
