Renters in Tampa, Florida, have access to a financial assistance programme worth up to $10,000 per household to help cover the cost of moving into a new home. The scheme is temporarily pausing new applications as the city reviews its operations.

Rental Assistance Programme Pauses New Applications

The Rental & Move-In Assistance Program, launched in March 2022 under Mayor Jane Castor, is temporarily stopping new applications from November 1. During the pause, the city will concentrate on processing applications already received and reviewing the programme.

Officials say the review will focus on preventing fraud, strengthening programme controls, supporting housing stability and improving customer service. Tampa residents are expected to see applications reopen in January 2027.

Up To $10,000 Available Per Household

The programme provides financial support for renters facing the costs associated with moving into a new property. Eligible expenses include: First month’s rent, Last month’s rent, Security deposit and Administrative fees. The maximum assistance available is $10,000 per household.

The funding is intended to help residents cover initial housing expenses rather than provide ongoing monthly rental payments.

Who Qualifies For The Tampa Housing Programme?

Applicants must meet several conditions to receive assistance. They must:

  • Live in a rental property located within Tampa city limits.
  • Have already received approval for a rental unit.
  • Have a move-in date within 45 days of submitting an application.
  • Have a stable source of income.
  • Earn no more than 140% of the Area Median Income.
  • Have not previously received assistance through this programme.

Meeting these conditions does not automatically guarantee funding, as applications remain subject to the city’s review and available resources.

How To Apply For The Financial Assistance

Applications must be submitted through the city’s official online portal. In-person applications are not accepted. The programme previously accepted applications only on Tuesdays between 9am and noon, subject to availability.

Residents can find the application information through the official Tampa website: Rental & Move-In Assistance Program – City of Tampa. Applications already submitted will continue to be processed during the temporary suspension.

When Will Applications Reopen?

Tampa officials expect the Rental & Move-In Assistance Program to reopen in January 2027. The temporary suspension will give the city time to review existing applications and introduce changes to the programme.

For renters planning a move, checking the eligibility requirements and preparing the necessary information ahead of the reopening could help them get ready to apply when new applications are accepted again.
