All US Post Office locations are closed today, Friday, June 19, as the country observes Juneteenth, the newest federal holiday. The nationwide shutdown affects retail services and means no regular mail delivery will take place today. USPS operations will resume tomorrow, Saturday, June 20.
USPS Closed Nationwide On June 19
The U.S. Postal Service has suspended operations at all branches across the country for Juneteenth. This includes closures of post office counters, meaning customers cannot send or collect mail in person during the holiday.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, marking the first addition to the US federal holiday calendar in nearly 40 years, since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established in 1983.
The date commemorates June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery to enslaved people in the state, following the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation.
No Regular Mail Delivery Today
There is no standard mail delivery service operating today, meaning letters and parcels will not be delivered or collected through normal USPS routes. Customers expecting deliveries will need to account for potential delays caused by the one-day shutdown.
However, Priority Mail Express remains operational, as it is available every day of the year, including federal holidays.
Online And Self-Service Options Still Available
Although post offices are closed, customers can still access postal services through usps.com, including tracking packages and purchasing postage.
Self-service kiosks located in select post office lobbies remain available in many areas. These machines allow users to weigh packages, print postage, purchase stamps and generate shipping labels. Some locations also support QR code-based label printing and package drop-off services.
USPS has expanded these automated services in recent years, with some kiosks operating 24/7 depending on location, offering an alternative during closures like today’s holiday.
What Customers Should Expect Next
Normal postal operations will resume on Saturday, June 20, when retail services and standard mail delivery restart across the country.
Customers with time-sensitive mail or packages are advised to adjust expectations for a one-day delay due to the federal holiday closure.
Juneteenth remains an important national observance in the United States, recognising the end of slavery and a key moment in American history.
