A growing food recall is affecting dozens of popular products sold across the United States. Chips, popcorn, nuts, chocolate powders and frozen pizzas are all included. Consumers are being urged to check their pantries and freezers as the list of affected items continues to expand.

Salmonella Recall Linked to Powdered Milk Used in Snacks

The recall began after California Dairies voluntarily recalled powdered milk and buttermilk on April 20 over concerns about possible salmonella contamination.

These ingredients were used in seasonings and mixes added to a wide range of products. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), more recalls may be announced as manufacturers review where the ingredients were used.

Products affected by the recall were distributed to grocery stores and retailers nationwide.

Recalled Snacks Include Chips, Nuts and Popcorn Products

Several well-known snack brands are involved. Selected Zapp’s potato chips, including Bayou Blackened Ranch and Big Cheezy, are part of the recall. Certain Dirty brand chips, including Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream and Onion, are also affected.

A number of trail mixes and nut products are included as well. These include Fisher Tex Mex Trail Mix, Southern Style Nuts Gourmet Hunter Mix, Southern Style Nuts Hunter Mix, Squirrel Brand Travelers Mix, Squirrel Brand Town & Country Mix, and Good & Gather Mexican Street Corn Trail Mix sold at Target.

Popcorn seasonings and gift sets are also on the list. Products from Williams Sonoma, Fireworks Popcorn, and Wildlife Seasoning containing White Cheddar or Sour Cream & Onion flavorings have been recalled.

More Recalled Products Include Chocolate Mixes and Frozen Pizza

The recall extends well beyond snack foods. Multiple Ghirardelli products are affected, including Premium Hot Cocoa, Chocolate Flavored Frappe Mix, Classic White Frappe Mix, Mocha Frappe Mix, and White Mocha Frappe Mix.

Other products include Pork King Good Sour Cream & Onion Seasoning, Pork King Good Sour Cream & Onion Pork Rinds, Giant Eagle Baked Pita Chips with Parmesan, Garlic & Herb, and Stoltzfus Family Dairy Sour Cream and Onion Cheese Curds.

Several frozen pizzas are also included, including Great Value Thin Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza, Great Value Stuffed Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza, Culinary Circle Ultra Thin Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza, and two breakfast pizzas sold under the Mama Cozzi’s brand.

What Consumers Should Do After the Salmonella Recall

The FDA advises consumers not to eat any recalled products. Items should be thrown away or returned to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

No illnesses have been reported so far, but salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, with symptoms typically appearing within six days. Older adults, infants and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness.

Because the recall continues to grow, consumers may want to review recent purchases and monitor FDA updates for any newly added products.
