Ford is recalling 86,543 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles in the United States after identifying a manufacturing issue that could cause rear side quarter window trim to detach while driving. The loose component could fall onto the road and create a hazard for other motorists.
The recall affects certain Mustang Mach-E models produced between February 17, 2023, and October 8, 2024. Ford determined that a change made during the assembly process may have reduced the strength of the adhesive bond holding the trim in place.
The issue highlights how a small modification in vehicle production can create unexpected safety concerns, even in modern electric vehicles built with advanced engineering systems.
Ford Identifies Assembly Problem behind Mustang Mach-E Recall
According to recall documents, the problem originated at a supplier facility in Mexico, where a new assembly jig was introduced to make installation of the rear side quarter window trim faster.
The updated process reduced the amount of time available for the trim primer to cure before installation. Ford found that this shorter preparation period could result in an insufficient bond between the trim and the vehicle body.
After several customer reports involving loose or detached trim pieces, Ford began investigating the issue. The company identified 219 reports connected to the defect, including cases where the exterior component had already separated from vehicles.
The automaker has not reported any crashes or injuries related to the recall. The main concern is the possibility that detached trim could become an obstacle on the roadway and affect drivers traveling behind an affected vehicle.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Documents Reveal the Safety Concern
The recall was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the U.S. agency responsible for monitoring vehicle safety standards and overseeing manufacturer recall actions.
The NHTSA documents describe how the production change affected the bonding process for the rear side quarter window trim. The agency’s recall database allows vehicle owners to verify whether their Mustang Mach-E is included in the campaign.
The case shows the role of federal safety monitoring in identifying manufacturing defects before they lead to larger incidents. Vehicle manufacturers must report potential safety problems and provide repair solutions when a defect could create risks for drivers or other road users.

Ford Will Replace Affected Trim Parts at No Cost
Owners of affected Mustang Mach-E vehicles will be able to receive a free repair through Ford and Lincoln dealerships. Technicians will inspect the rear side quarter window trim and replace the component when necessary.
Ford plans to notify affected owners through recall letters expected to arrive in mid-September. Drivers can also check their vehicle identification number through Ford services, dealership networks, or the NHTSA recall database.
The repair process is designed to address the bonding issue rather than replace larger vehicle components. The recall applies only to specific production periods connected to the identified assembly change.
