The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall involving flavored roasted peanuts distributed across multiple states. The action concerns the presence of a banned sweetener in products that were already removed from circulation earlier this year.

According to FDA enforcement records, the recall involves two varieties of Mei Heong Yuen roasted peanuts that were distributed in 19 states. While the agency considers the health risk to be low, the products violate federal food regulations and remain subject to removal from the market.

Products Recalled Due to Presence of Banned Cyclamate Sweetener

The recall centers on the detection of cyclamates, a class of artificial sweeteners that are not permitted in food products sold in the United States. According to the FDA, the affected items are Mei Heong Yuen Walnut Flavor Roasted Peanuts and Mei Heong Yuen Garlic Flavor Roasted Peanuts, both packaged in 9.17-ounce (260-gram) bags and distributed by Super World Trading Inc., based in Brooklyn, New York.

The recall was voluntarily initiated on February 19, 2026, and later received a Class III classification from the FDA on April 1. This category indicates that exposure to the product is not likely to cause serious adverse health consequences, though it still represents a regulatory violation.

According to the FDA’s official records, a total of 595 cases were included in the recall. The products were shipped to a wide geographic range of states, including New York, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Washington, among others. The agency has not indicated any reported illnesses linked to the products.

Specific identifying details have been provided for consumers and retailers. The walnut-flavored peanuts are associated with recall number H-0642-2026, manufactured on July 17, 2025, with an expiration date of January 16, 2027. The garlic-flavored variety carries recall number H-0643-2026, produced on July 10, 2025, and marked with an expiration date of January 9, 2027.

Regulatory Classification Highlights Compliance Issue Rather Than Health Risk

The FDA’s decision to assign a Class III designation reflects the nature of the violation. According to the agency, this classification is used in situations where a product does not meet regulatory standards but is unlikely to pose significant health risks under normal consumption conditions.

In this case, the issue is not contamination or spoilage, but the inclusion of cyclamates, which have been banned in U.S. food products for decades. According to FDA guidelines, even low-risk violations require corrective action to maintain compliance with federal law.

The recall remains ongoing, and the affected products are expected to be removed from retail and distribution channels. Consumers who may still have these items are advised to check packaging details carefully and avoid consuming the recalled peanuts.

According to the FDA, enforcement actions such as this are part of routine oversight to ensure that food products in the U.S. meet established safety and labeling standards. While the classification suggests minimal risk, the presence of a prohibited ingredient is sufficient to warrant removal from the market.
