The closure will take place on Labor Day, a federal holiday held every year on the first Monday of September. The holiday recognizes the contributions and achievements of American workers and has been observed as an official federal holiday since 1894, when it was established by President Grover Cleveland.

Costco’s decision follows its long-standing practice of closing warehouses on several major holidays. Labor Day is one of seven holidays when the company stops operations, alongside New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Costco’s Nationwide Closure Will Affect Members’ Shopping Plans

Costco members will not be able to visit warehouses, shop for bulk products, or use the company’s food courts on September 7. All 623 US locations will remain closed for the full day before reopening after the holiday.

The closure gives Costco employees a day off during the federal holiday. The company’s holiday schedule applies across its US warehouse network and affects all locations at the same time.

According to The Sun, other organizations that are not considered essential, including federal government offices, post offices, and banks, will also close their doors for Labor Day.

Other Major Retailers Plan to Stay Open During Labor Day

Unlike Costco, many large retail chains will continue operating on September 7. Several national retailers will keep stores open for customers or adjust their schedules during the holiday.

Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Kohl’s, Macy’s, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods will all remain open on Labor Day.

The difference reflects the separate holiday policies used by retailers across the country. While Costco closes its warehouses on selected holidays, many other stores continue normal operations or offer modified hours.

Aldi and Sam’s Club May Use Reduced Holiday Hours

Some warehouse and grocery retailers follow a middle approach during Labor Day. Aldi and Sam’s Club typically remain available to customers but operate with limited hours.

For Costco shoppers, the September 7 closure means planning purchases around the company’s holiday schedule. Labor Day remains one of the seven dates when Costco closes every US warehouse to observe the holiday.
