Hundreds of thousands of homeowners in Minnesota are set to receive automatic property tax relief payments averaging $1,641, as part of a $125 million expansion to the state’s Homestead Credit Refund programme. The initiative aims to offset rising property tax costs and provide targeted financial support to eligible residents.
Automatic Payments for Homeowners
The Minnesota Legislature confirmed that around 588,000 homeowners will benefit from the updated relief plan. The additional funding has increased the total value of refunds, resulting in an average uplift of approximately 14.88 percent, or about $213 more per household compared with previous payments.
Officials have stressed that the payments are automatic for eligible applicants, meaning no new application is required for those already enrolled in the Homestead Credit Refund programme. Homeowners who have already submitted their 2025 returns will see the increased amount included in their final refund.
Property Tax Relief Plan Explained
The Homestead Credit Refund is designed to help homeowners whose property taxes take up a significant portion of their income. Minnesota Commissioner of Revenue Paul Marquart said the expanded funding is intended to provide direct relief to households facing rising tax pressures, particularly those most affected by higher housing costs.
He explained that the programme is an effective way to support homeowners experiencing property taxes that are disproportionately high compared to their income levels, offering immediate financial assistance without additional bureaucracy.

Who Is Eligible for Payments
To qualify, homeowners must own and occupy their home and be responsible for paying property taxes. Income limits also apply, with households required to have earned less than $142,490 in the previous year to be eligible for the refund.
Officials also noted that households with property taxes amounting to around 2 percent or more of their income are likely to qualify for support, encouraging residents to check their eligibility if they are unsure.
Payment Timeline and Applications
Refund applications for the programme remain open until August 2027, giving homeowners ample time to apply if they have not already done so. However, for most eligible residents, payments will be processed automatically without further action required.
The increased refunds are expected to be distributed in late September and early October, providing a timely boost for households as they manage ongoing housing and living costs.
Wider Impact of the Relief Scheme
The expanded Homestead Credit Refund is part of broader efforts to address rising housing costs and ensure that property tax burdens remain manageable for middle-income families. Officials say the programme is particularly important in maintaining housing stability and reducing financial pressure on homeowners across the state.
With inflation and housing costs continuing to challenge households, the additional relief is expected to provide meaningful support for hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans in the months ahead.
