Consumers in 26 US states and Washington DC have just days left to submit claims for a share of an $87.5 million settlement linked to allegations that beef prices were artificially inflated between 2014 and 2019. The case involves major processors including Tyson Foods and Cargill, both of which deny wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid further litigation costs.
Beef Price Settlement Covers Purchases Over Five Years
The class action concerns claims that large beef processors engaged in anti-competitive practices that led to higher retail prices for everyday beef products. Eligible purchases include fresh or frozen cuts such as chuck, rib, loin and round, bought for personal household use from supermarkets or grocery stores.
The settlement period runs from August 1, 2014 to December 31, 2019, and only applies to purchases made in eligible states including California, New York, Florida, Illinois and 22 others, plus Washington DC.
Who Is Eligible To File A Claim
Consumers may qualify if they purchased eligible beef products during the covered period in one of the listed jurisdictions. The settlement excludes premium and speciality categories such as Wagyu, USDA Prime, organic, grass-fed, halal, kosher, and antibiotic-free beef.
Processed or prepared beef products are also excluded, including ground, seasoned, marinated, cooked, or breaded items. Shoppers who made purchases across multiple states can include all eligible transactions in a single claim form.
How Payouts Will Be Calculated
The total settlement fund stands at $87.5 million, but final payouts will depend on the number of valid claims submitted. Before distribution, legal fees, administrative costs, and payments to class representatives will be deducted from the total.
Lawyers may receive up to $29.16 million, with additional funds allocated to expenses and representative awards. The remaining amount will be shared among approved claimants based on estimated beef purchases during the eligible period.
No receipts are required at the initial stage, although supporting documentation may be requested later in the process if claims are reviewed.
Deadline To Submit Claims Is June 30, 2026
Consumers must submit their claim form by June 30, 2026 to be included in the settlement. Applications can be completed online or submitted by mail using a printed form sent to the settlement administrator.
Payments will only be issued after court approval and once any appeals process is completed, meaning distribution may take time even after the deadline passes.
Payment Options For Approved Claimants
Successful claimants will be able to choose how they receive their payout. Options include PayPal, Venmo, physical cheque, or digital gift cards for retailers such as Amazon, Starbucks and Instacart.
The lawsuit alleges that beef processors coordinated pricing practices that increased costs for consumers. The companies involved continue to deny wrongdoing but agreed to settle the case to avoid prolonged legal proceedings.
