Several tropical systems are developing simultaneously near Australia, signalling a more active weather pattern across the region. Among them, one cyclone is strengthening and moving toward Queensland. Authorities are monitoring its trajectory closely as uncertainty remains over its path and intensity.
Cyclone Maila Strengthens and Tracks Toward Queensland
Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila is currently positioned in the Solomon Sea, between the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the system is expected to move toward north Queensland by the weekend.
Maila has reached category 5 intensity, with sustained winds of around 215 km/h near its centre. That places it among the most powerful systems on the scale — at least for now. Forecasts suggest it may weaken slightly before approaching land, potentially dropping to category 3.
Even at that level, the system could bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, particularly if it crosses the Cape York Peninsula as currently projected. Timing remains a bit uncertain, but the window sits around the weekend or early next week.
A Second Cyclone Develops Near Fiji with Limited Direct Impact
Further east, Tropical Cyclone Vaianu has formed near Fiji. Unlike Maila, it is not expected to make landfall in Australia. Still, it is being monitored due to its regional influence, expains 9News.
The system is forecast to move south toward New Zealand, where it may transition into an extratropical cyclone. Even after that transition, it could retain considerable strength — enough to affect areas like Auckland with wind and rain.
For Australia, the impact is expected to be indirect. That said, weather systems don’t always behave neatly, and broader atmospheric shifts can sometimes carry across regions.
A Third System Emerging in the Indian Ocean
At the same time, a tropical low is forming in the Indian Ocean, to the north-west of Australia. The Bureau currently assigns a moderate chance of it developing into a cyclone from mid-next week.
Details remain limited at this stage. Its path, strength and potential impact are still unclear. But its presence adds to what is already a busy pattern across the region.
Three systems at once is not unheard of — though it does tend to draw attention.
A Period of Elevated Cyclone Activity
Taken together, these systems point to a phase of heightened tropical activity around Australia and the wider Pacific.
The main focus remains on Cyclone Maila, given its trajectory toward Queensland. The other systems may stay at a distance, but they contribute to a more complex and active weather environment.
