According to a research, investing in even a simple energy-saving device, which costs around £12, has the potential to save UK households up to £258 per year. In this relation, leading energy suppliers including OVO, British Gas, EDF, Eon and Octopus are encouraging customers to install the nifty gadget, which is usually put on the hallways and has the ability to track energy consumption in the household.

How the Energy Monitor Works

The Energy Savings Trust, estimating a cost between £12 and £89, offers an energy monitor that can reduce the energy bills by 5% to 15%. Given Ofgem’s current ceiling on energy price services at £1717 per twin, this translates to approximately £258 in a year.

The device, which is small and portable, attaches to the energy meter in the house, and shows real time energy usage, thereby alerting homeowners about over use of appliances and assisting in regulating use.

The monitor is especially effective for curbing wasteful energy habits, such as leaving devices on standby or unnecessary lights on. According to energy experts, these straightforward adjustments can lead to noticeable savings.

Where to Find the Device

Affordable options are available at popular UK retailers like B&Q, which sells the device for as low as £12. Many smart meter users might already have access to an “in-home display,” which functions similarly by showing both electricity and gas consumption. Some suppliers offer apps with similar functionality, though many find that in-home displays provide more detailed insights than app data.

Extra Savings for OVO Customers with Heat Pump Credits

In a separate initiative, OVO is providing its customers with up to £340 in free bill credits for transitioning from gas boilers to heat pumps. OVO's Beyond members who install heat pumps can accrue a year of free heating over two years, redeemable as monthly bill credits of £28.46 each, adding up to £341.52 over a maximum of 12 months.

To qualify, customers must purchase a heat pump directly from OVO within a two-year period, sign up for the Heat Pump Plus tariff, and have a smart meter and direct debit setup. Mat Moakes, OVO’s Chief Commercial Officer, notes, “We’re helping households transition to a greener future by offering substantial support for heat pump installations.”

OVO Beyond customers also gain access to exclusive savings, discounts, and perks totaling up to £1,000 through Kaluza’s advanced software platform, which is designed to help households reduce costs while moving towards sustainable energy solutions.
