Massachusetts is expanding access to home heating assistance as households face higher energy costs, with eligible residents able to receive payments of up to $1,200 during the 2026-27 winter season.

Who Could Receive the Energy Payment?

The programme is part of a broader state response to rising heating and electricity costs. Around 156,000 low-income households are expected to qualify for assistance ranging from $525 to $1,200.

The expanded programme targets households facing financial pressure from winter heating costs. Around 156,000 low-income households across Massachusetts could receive between $525 and $1,200, depending on their circumstances.

The state has also expanded eligibility to households earning between 60% and 100% of Massachusetts’ median income. Some households earning between $103,049 and $171,749 may qualify for a separate one-time emergency benefit of up to $680.

When Will the Assistance Be Available?

The main heating assistance period runs from November 1, 2026, through April 30, 2027. The separate emergency benefit for households within the expanded income range is expected to begin in December and continue through April 30, 2027.

The timing of payments can vary depending on the programme and the household’s application.

Renters Can Also Qualify

Eligibility is not limited to homeowners. Households whose heating costs are included in their rent may also qualify for assistance. People who are not already receiving public assistance can apply as well, provided they meet the programme’s income and eligibility requirements.

Residents can submit an application online through the state’s home energy assistance system.

More Than $15 Million Is Set Aside for Heating Costs

Massachusetts has allocated more than $15 million specifically for heating assistance. The funding can support households that use heating oil as well as those whose homes rely on utility services.

The state is also providing wider relief through changes to electricity bills.

State Expands Eligibility as Energy Costs Rise

Governor Maura Healey declared an energy emergency and signed an executive order expanding access to home heating assistance. The order also directs action to remove certain charges from electricity bills for eligible households and businesses.

Healey said families were feeling higher costs when buying fuel, ordering heating oil and paying electricity bills. The state says its wider package represents nearly $150 million in savings and assistance.

A Separate Benefit Could Reach Middle-Income Households

The expansion is not limited to the lowest-income residents. Households earning between 60% and 100% of the state’s median income are being brought into the assistance system.

For some households within that range, the one-time emergency benefit can reach $680. The income limits and precise eligibility conditions vary according to the type of assistance being sought.

How to Apply for Assistance

Massachusetts residents who believe they qualify can apply online for home energy assistance. Applicants should have information about their household income and heating arrangements available when completing the application.

Because different programmes have different income thresholds and payment amounts, residents should check the state’s official eligibility rules before applying. The assistance is designed to help households manage winter energy costs through April 30, 2027, with payments depending on each household’s circumstances.
