Nearly 5.9 million French press coffee makers are being recalled in the United States after reports that their glass containers can break during use, potentially causing serious burns. The recall concerns several popular Bodum models sold over several decades, with consumers urged to check their coffee makers before using them again.

70 Reports Of Broken Glass Containers

The recall was announced by Bodum USA on October 29, 2026, following reports of glass carafes breaking unexpectedly. The company received 70 reports of breakages, including 48 cases involving burns.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the problem can occur when a metal spoon or utensil damages the glass while stirring coffee. A weakened carafe could subsequently break, exposing users to hot liquid and creating a risk of serious injury.

Which Bodum Coffee Makers Are Affected?

The recall covers 8-cup and 12-cup French press models with replaceable glass carafes. Affected product ranges include: Bodum Bistro; Brazil Caffettiera; Chambord; Crema; Java and Kenya.

These models were sold between 1974 and October 2026. They were available through retailers including Walmart and Target, as well as online platforms such as Amazon, Bodum.com, Target.com and Walmart.com.

Prices ranged from approximately $15 to $65. Consumers can consult the official CPSC recall notice to check product photographs and identify affected models.

What Should Owners Do?

Consumers who own one of the affected coffee makers are advised to stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee inside the glass carafe. Bodum is providing a replacement plastic stirring spoon designed to avoid damaging the glass.

Customers will also receive a warning label reminding them not to use carafes that are already damaged. Owners should contact Bodum to request the replacement spoon and follow the instructions provided by the company.
