More than 40 million people were projected to face at least a Moderate risk of heat-related impacts on Wednesday, while 26 million were under Extreme risk, according to NOAA Weather Prediction Center meteorologists Amanda Reinhart and Bob Oravec. The episode stands out not simply because of daytime temperatures, but because of its persistence and unusually warm nights, which can limit relief from prolonged heat.
Heat Stretches From Texas Into the Tennessee Valley
Heat advisories covered parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, an upper-level high associated with a persistent heat dome remained established across the South, keeping hot conditions in place.
The highest heat risk extended from South and Southeast Texas northeast through the Lower and Middle Mississippi Valley and into the Tennessee Valley. Areas of the Ohio Valley and southeastern United States were also experiencing elevated temperatures, particularly affecting people vulnerable to heat-related illness.
In Oklahoma, a National Weather Service advisory said heat-index values could reach 107 degrees Fahrenheit across eastern, northeastern and southeastern parts of the state and portions of northwestern and west-central Arkansas. Another advisory covered southeastern Kansas and much of southern Missouri, including Joplin, Springfield, Branson and Lake of the Ozarks communities, where values could reach about 105 degrees from Wednesday through Friday.
Texarkana, in northeastern Texas, faced a forecast high near 109 degrees during the hottest part of Wednesday. Parts of central Mississippi, southeastern Arkansas and northeastern Louisiana could experience values up to 110 degrees.
The contrast with areas farther north was pronounced. While the Southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley faced temperatures near or above 100 degrees, locations north of a slow-moving front across the Central Plains and Midwest could see highs only in the upper 60s and lower 70s.
Persistent Heat and Warm Nights Increase Health Risks
A heat dome develops when a large high-pressure system becomes stalled over a region, trapping hot air near the surface. According to the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), the system acts like a lid in the atmosphere, preventing warm surface air from rising and dispersing. When such patterns move slowly, heat can accumulate over several days or even weeks.
North Texas has experienced particularly persistent conditions. Reinhart and Oravec said the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex was recording unusually warm overnight minimum temperatures alongside a historic multi-week period of heat, including its highest 30-day average high temperature on record.
Warm nights matter because the body receives less opportunity to recover from daytime heat. High humidity can also restrict the evaporation of sweat, reducing one of the body’s main cooling mechanisms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, extreme heat causes approximately 1,220 deaths in the United States each year.
Heat exposure can cause heat exhaustion and heatstroke and can contribute to cardiovascular and respiratory complications, kidney failure and electrolyte imbalances. Older adults, children, pregnant women, outdoor workers, athletes and people with existing heart or lung conditions face greater risks.
The CDC recommends staying in air-conditioned buildings or public cooling centers when necessary, drinking water regularly and shifting strenuous outdoor activity to cooler parts of the day. Confusion, fainting, loss of consciousness or an extremely high body temperature can indicate heatstroke, a medical emergency requiring immediate action.
