The cubes contain small magnets that allow children to connect the pieces and create three-dimensional designs. The problem arises when a cube breaks or opens, making the magnets accessible. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, swallowed high-powered magnets can attract one another, or other metal objects, inside the digestive system and become lodged there.
Loose Magnets Can Cause Severe Internal Injuries
The CPSC said magnet ingestion can lead to intestinal perforations, twisting or blockage, as well as blood poisoning and death. The risk is different from swallowing many ordinary small objects because separate magnets can pull toward each other through sections of intestinal tissue.
Yi Suen Commerce, the Hong Kong-based importer of the products, is aware of two children who swallowed magnets from the recalled cubes and needed surgery to have them removed. According to the CPSC, the company has also received at least 27 reports of cubes breaking or opening and allowing magnets to become loose.
The recall applies to Goody King magnetic building toys sold in sets containing 45, 56, 100, 120, 150 or 300 cubes. They were marketed in several themes and colors, including forests, dinosaurs, unicorns, castles, farms, galaxies and other building or landscape designs.
Affected model numbers include ZB150, DK100, GC150, DIN100, FM100, FF100, FR200, PX200, FR300, GL100, MR200, FR150, MG100, MA200, SI150, SB56, TSB56, MR045, UN100, UN150, VF200 and WD100. The model number appears on the back of the product packaging.
The products were manufactured in China and imported by Yi Suen Commerce. They were priced between $17 and $50 when sold through Amazon during the period covered by the withdrawal.
Consumers Are Being Told to Stop Using the Sets
People who own the recalled cubes should stop using them immediately and contact Yi Suen Commerce for a full refund. According to the Associated Press, customers who successfully register for the recall will receive a prepaid shipping label, and a purchase receipt is not required.
Refunds will be issued after the company physically receives the returned products. Consumers can contact Yi Suen Commerce by email at [email protected] or through its recall website at recall.goodyking.com.
The CPSC recall notice lists the action under recall number 26-686. It identifies magnet ingestion as the hazard and a refund as the remedy. The recall follows documented incidents involving the products themselves rather than a theoretical defect. Consumers with one of the listed models are therefore being directed to remove the toys from use and follow the return process provided by Yi Suen Commerce.
