Recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will see adjustments to their payment schedules in September 2025, mainly due to the placement of the Labor Day holiday. These changes, while routine, can impact monthly budgeting—especially for individuals depending on Social Security as a primary or sole source of income.

According to a breakdown published by Marca, the updated calendar follows standard administrative procedures triggered when payment dates fall on federal holidays. The modified deposit schedule applies to both SSI and SSDI programs and is designed to maintain uninterrupted disbursement while accounting for the national holiday.

Ssdi Payments Follow Birthday-Based Schedule

For SSDI recipients, the date of payment is determined by the beneficiary’s date of birth. In September 2025, the payment calendar is as follows:

  • Birthdays between the 1st and 10th: Payment on Wednesday, September 10
  • Birthdays between the 11th and 20th: Payment on Wednesday, September 17
  • Birthdays between the 21st and 31st: Payment on Wednesday, September 24

In addition, those who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997, or who receive both SSI and SSDI, will receive their SSDI payment earlier, on Wednesday, September 3, regardless of their birthday.

Some beneficiaries can receive more than $1,200 a month, depending on their work history. These payments play a vital role in covering housing, healthcare, and food expenses. For many households, Social Security benefits form the foundation of their monthly budget. Understanding the precise deposit dates helps reduce financial stress and allows recipients to manage bills and obligations more confidently.

No SSI Deposit in September 2025

In most months, SSI payments are issued on the first day of the month. But in September 2025, there will be no deposit, because September 1 falls on Labor Day, a federal holiday. According to standard Social Security procedures, the payment is moved forward to the preceding business day.

This means SSI recipients will receive their September payment on Friday, August 29, 2025.

This adjustment leads to an unusual situation:

“Those receiving SSI will have two payments in August (one at the beginning of the month and one at the end), but none during September.”

It’s important to understand that the second August payment is intended to cover September, not to be treated as an additional benefit. Misinterpreting this can lead to budgeting shortfalls later in the month.

Planning Ahead for SSI and SSDI Recipients

“Knowing the exact dates allows you to better organize your monthly budget.”

While these calendar adjustments are routine for the Social Security Administration, they can catch recipients off guard—especially when a deposit is entirely absent in a given month. Individuals who are unaware of the Labor Day shift might feel confused or anxious when their bank accounts show no incoming payment in September.

To reduce this risk, recipients are encouraged to mark adjusted payment dates on their calendars and plan ahead for months with no SSI deposit.

In the case of SSDI, where payment dates vary based on birth date, it’s also wise to double-check expected deposit days each month—especially when holidays are involved.

Summary of Important Dates

  • SSI for September: Paid Friday, August 29, 2025 (no payment will be made in September)
  • SSDI if born before May 1997 or receiving both SSI and SSDI: Paid Wednesday, September 3
  • SSDI based on birthday:
    • 1st–10th: September 10
    • 11th–20th: September 17
    • 21st–31st: September 24

For millions of Americans depending on Social Security, these dates are more than administrative—they shape how families manage monthly expenses and avoid unexpected shortfalls. By staying informed and anticipating early deposits or missed months, beneficiaries can avoid unnecessary worry and keep their financial planning on track.

  1. I’ve paid into Social Security for approximately 37 years, but due to COVID, I was forced to apply for benefits at 62 years old. It’s unfair that after so many years I’m only receiving $1,046 monthly in 2025. Who can survive on a such a small amount each month? I’m now 67 years old and getting only half of what I should be receiving, is totally ludicrous. I think if a person has to apply at 62 for legitimate reasons, they should not receive reduced benefits for the rest of their lives. Benefits should be Increased to the rightful amount at about 65 or 67. I find it to be a form of punishment, not payment, because we do not receive full benefits for Life. I’ve been married since 1981, but separated. I’m currently single, never re-married. My husband is a Correction Officer at Rikers Island. I’ve not been in contact with him for a long time, so I don’t know his current status. Can I apply for Spousal benefits? This would help immensely.
