Amid growing concerns over food safety, a new recall has been issued for a variety of soft cheeses sold at major retail locations in the United States. The affected products, linked to potential Listeria contamination, were distributed across multiple states and include popular varieties such as Camembert and Brie. While no illnesses have been reported, consumers are being urged to act swiftly if they have purchased the identified items.

Wegmans Cheeses Recalled Due to Potential Contamination

A range of soft cheeses sold by Wegmans Food Markets has been recalled across ten US states and the District of Columbia following a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious illness.

The recall was announced by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on August 12, 2025. It involves specific batches of Camembert, Brie and cheese flights sold between July 1 and August 12 this year. The cheese was supplied to Wegmans by Estancia Holdings of Cumming, Georgia, which initiated the recall after being alerted by a French supplier that three shipments might be contaminated.

Details of Affected Products and Regions

According to the FDA, the affected cheeses were distributed in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The following products are subject to the recall:

  • Wegmans Medium Camembert Soft Ripened Cheese (8.8 oz) – UPC: 77890-53515, best-by: 7/26/25, 8/12/25, 8/19/25

Understanding the Health Risks Associated With Listeria

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen known to cause listeriosis, a serious infection particularly dangerous for older adults, pregnant individuals, people with weakened immune systems, and young children.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In more severe cases, the infection can spread to the nervous system, causing headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions. Wegmans has made a helpline available at 1-855-934-3663, open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST, for questions related to the recall.
