Millions of Brits are bracing for a deluge of rain as weather warnings are issued for up to a month’s worth of rainfall in a single day. This extreme weather event, which will affect regions from Cornwall to South Wales, is expected to cause significant disruption and potential flooding.

The storm is set to intensify throughout the day, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and coastal gales expected to sweep across the UK. The Environment Agency has already issued flood alerts, and many areas are under yellow weather warnings as heavy rain threatens to inundate parts of southern England and South Wales.

Widespread Impact of Heavy Rainfall

According to the Met Office, between 20-60mm of rain is predicted to fall across southern England, South Wales, and parts of South West England throughout the day. In some areas, the rainfall could be as high as 60mm within a six- to nine-hour period, which is nearly the monthly average for places like Plymouth and Southampton.

The warnings cover a vast stretch of the UK, from the English Channel coast to the southern edges of Wales, and extend across 42 regions in 13 counties. Locations such as Cornwall, Devon, and Herefordshire are among the most vulnerable. These areas will see conditions that could lead to localised flooding, particularly in regions around rivers like the River Axe, which has already triggered flood alerts in Devon.

Heavy showers will follow the initial downpours, potentially leading to thunderstorms in places, while strong winds will contribute to hazardous coastal conditions. The Met Office has advised people in affected areas to remain vigilant and prepare for possible flooding, especially in areas close to riverbanks and low-lying regions.

Flooding and Severe Weather Risks for Southern England

In addition to the rain, coastal gales are likely to hit southern parts of the UK, with winds expected to be particularly strong along the English Channel coasts. According to the Met Office, gusts of wind could exacerbate the already challenging weather conditions, making travel dangerous for motorists and pedestrians alike.

As the heavy rain moves northeast through the morning and early afternoon, it will be accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and showers. While some areas will start to dry up later in the day, the persistent rain in the southwest will continue, especially around Shetland, where conditions will remain wet overnight.

For residents in flood-prone areas, authorities are urging preparedness. The Environment Agency has recommended flood plans and emergency kits containing essentials such as first aid supplies, bottled water, a torch, and a battery-powered radio.
