Millions of pensioners and low-income households across England and Wales will receive automatic payments of up to £300 this winter under an expanded version of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme. The initiative, intended to assist with rising energy bill costs during the colder months, applies to individuals born before 22 September 1959 and residing in the UK during a specific assessment period in September 2025.

According to GB News, the government has widened eligibility compared to the previous year, allowing a larger number of households to qualify. Payments will be issued directly into bank accounts, starting from November.

Broader Eligibility Following Government Reversal

In a shift from last year’s policy, the UK Government has reintroduced broader eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment. The revised scheme will apply to anyone earning £35,000 or less per year and born before 22 September 1959, as long as they reside in England or Wales during the qualifying week between 15 and 21 September 2025.

Roughly nine million people are expected to benefit from the initiative, which aims to help cover increased heating costs during the winter months. The majority will receive their payments automatically, with no application required if they are already receiving eligible benefits.

Recipients of the following benefits will qualify automatically for the Winter Fuel Payment:

  • State Pension
  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit

Anyone not currently receiving these benefits must apply if they have never claimed before, or if they have deferred their State Pension since their last payment.
