Beefeater will close all of its remaining UK restaurants in September 2026, marking the end of one of Britain’s best-known casual dining brands as owner Whitbread moves to focus on its hotel operations.
The closures will affect every Beefeater restaurant across the UK, with customers told that their local venues will stop trading on Thursday 10 September 2026. The decision forms part of a wider plan by Whitbread, which also owns Premier Inn, to reshape the company around accommodation rather than branded restaurants.
Whitbread Confirms End Of Beefeater Restaurant Operations
According to Swindon Advertiser, customers learned about the closures through letters sent to members of the Beefeater Reward Club. The message informed diners that the company had announced changes to its business, leading to the closure of its branded restaurant operations.
The letter stated: “As you may have seen, we have recently announced changes to our business, which is resulting in the closure of our Branded Restaurants.
“This means that on Thursday 10 September 2026 your local Beefeater and all other UK Beefeaters will close.”
The announcement brings an end to the restaurant chain’s long presence in the UK dining market. Beefeater became known for its steak-focused menus and locations often connected to Premier Inn hotels.
Whitbread Plans A New Future Built Around Hotels
The closure decision follows a strategic review by Whitbread, which identified opportunities to concentrate investment on its hotel business. The company has faced rising operating expenses, including higher business costs and changes affecting employers.
Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul previously explained the reasoning behind the transformation plan.
“We always challenge ourselves to improve and, in light of significant cost increases in the form of business rates and national insurance, as well as the implied market discount to our inherent value, we’ve looked hard at the options open to us to maximise value creation over the medium and long-term.
“This has been a rigorous process and we’ve approached all options with an open mind.
“Our new five-year plan builds on our strengths and drives a significant acceleration of our strategy.
“This plan will transform Whitbread into a higher-margin, higher-returning pure-play hotel business.
“We’re going to go further and faster to deliver a great experience for our guests and high-quality growth and returns for our shareholders.”
Beefeater Closure Reflects Wider Changes In UK Dining
The shutdown of Beefeater restaurants comes during a difficult period for many UK hospitality businesses. Rising costs, changing consumer habits and pressure on restaurant margins have forced several companies to review their operations.
For Whitbread, the move represents a shift away from running restaurants and toward expanding its position in the hotel sector. The company intends to direct resources into Premier Inn and related accommodation opportunities as part of its five-year strategy.
The closure will remove a familiar restaurant name from towns and cities across the country. Many Beefeater locations have operated for decades, often serving communities alongside nearby hotels.
