Millions of UK consumers could soon be entitled to compensation from six high-profile legal actions ranging from mis-sold car finance to credit card overcharges. The combined claims could see households recover amounts varying from small settlements to several thousand pounds.

The cases include lawsuits against major corporations such as mastercard, apple, and Marks & Spencer, as well as action over secret insurance commissions and potential payouts linked to historic energy bill overcharges. According to the Financial Vonduct Authority (FCA), the redress for car finance mis-selling alone could cost banks between £9 billion and £18 billion.

Car Finance Scandal and Consumer Redress

The FCA announced it will consult on a compensation scheme next year for motorists affected by mis-sold car finance agreements. The regulator’s chief executive, Nikhil Rathi, stated that it was “fair for their customers to be compensated” and added that the scheme would be designed to be “easy to participate in,” with no need for third-party claims companies. According to the BBC, industry analysts estimate that payouts for affected drivers could average under £950 per claim.

Bobby Dean, a liberal democrat mp and treasury committee member, described the scandal as “the biggest consumer finance scandal since PPI,” warning that compensation bills could “surge above £10 billion.” Legal experts stress that this case highlights systemic issues in the car finance market and could reshape the way lenders handle commission-based sales.

Meanwhile, other collective actions are targeting property freeholders over alleged “secret” insurance commissions, with claims suggesting individual flat owners could receive up to £2,000. Legal letters seen by BBC news allege that freeholders added undisclosed commissions to service charges, a claim strongly denied by the companies involved.

Mastercard, Apple and Data Breach Lawsuits

A separate lawsuit approved by the competition appeal tribunal could result in millions of UK shoppers receiving up to £70 each from MasterCard. According to the case led by Walter Merrick, historic fees imposed between 1992 and 2008 inflated prices for consumers, regardless of whether they owned a MasterCard at the time. The company declined to comment on the ruling.

Apple is also facing a £3 billion legal claim launched by Which?, accusing the tech giant of locking users into its iCloud service at inflated prices. If successful, around 40 million customers could receive an estimated £70 each. Apple has rejected the allegations, arguing that users “are not required to use iCloud” and that data transfer is designed to be “as easy as possible.”

Further legal action includes proceedings against marks & spencer for an alleged data breach, while collective claims related to energy bill overcharges remain ongoing. According to Thompsons solicitors, more than 350 victims have already joined the M&S case, citing financial loss, distress, and heightened risks of fraud.
