With energy costs continuing to strain household budgets, Octopus Energy has announced a new initiative aimed at assisting pensioners who missed out on the government’s Winter Fuel Payment this year. Under the scheme, eligible customers can claim payments of £50, £100, or £200, depending on their circumstances.
The move comes after changes to the government’s Winter Fuel Payment criteria, which now primarily benefits pensioners receiving Pension Credit or specific means-tested benefits. Octopus Energy’s effort is designed to fill the gap left by these changes, ensuring that vulnerable households do not go without support during the colder months.
Why the Changes Were Made
Previously, the government’s Winter Fuel Payment was available to all households with a resident of state pension age, providing £200 or £300 annually. However, from 2024, the benefit was made means-tested, limiting eligibility to households receiving:

The Winter Fuel Payments offered through this scheme are targeted at pensioners who were previously eligible for the government’s assistance but no longer qualify under the new rules.

Eligible Octopus Energy customers can apply for payments of £50, £100, or £200 to help offset their winter energy bills. The application process involves providing basic information about:
