Free Rail Travel for Heroes: How Veterans Can Ride for Free This November

To mark this year’s Remembrance, veterans and military personnel are being offered free train travel across the UK. The rail industry is making it easier for those who served to attend services and reflect on their sacrifices. With the added significance of VE Day’s 80th anniversary and the bicentenary of rail travel, this initiative brings an added layer of honour to the occasion.

As the UK prepares for Remembrance Day 2025, the rail industry is offering free train travel to military personnel, veterans, and volunteers to help them attend commemorative services. This initiative not only honours those who served but also acknowledges the vital role railways played during wartime.

The free travel offer, which spans the weekend of November 8 and 9, aims to ensure that serving personnel, veterans, and volunteers can take part in these solemn national reflections. The offer extends to anyone in military uniform, holders of an MOD90 ID card, or veterans with relevant proof of service, including a Veterans Railcard.

An Industry’s Commitment to Remembrance

The rail industry has long been linked to the nation’s wartime efforts, from transporting troops and supplies during the World Wars to providing key services to those on the front lines. Jacqueline Starr, CEO of the Rail Delivery Group, stressed this enduring connection, stating, “The railway has always been closely connected to Remembrance, with so many rail workers themselves having given their lives during the World Wars.”

This year marks the bicentenary of the UK rail system, as well as the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which adds even more significance to the ongoing tribute to fallen soldiers.

As part of the free travel scheme, veterans and military personnel can travel to and from London on November 8 or 9, with return journeys permitted on Sunday, November 9. For services outside London, the offer extends only on November 9. Royal British Legion volunteers, carrying an official ID, are also eligible for free travel to and from London Poppy Day, which takes place from October 29 to 31.

According to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, “Remembrance services are a vital time for our country to come together, reflecting on the sacrifices made and honouring those who continue to protect our way of life. Free train travel will help make it easier for veterans and serving personnel to take part in those moments of national reflection.”

The Importance of Accessibility and Inclusion

This initiative goes beyond merely offering travel to those attending Remembrance Day services. By making transportation more accessible, it highlights the nation’s commitment to remembering not only the military personnel who sacrificed their lives but also those who continue to serve.

Local councils across the UK, including Worthing, Southampton, and Bournemouth, have also announced services to commemorate Remembrance Day. The free rail travel offer aims to support attendance at these services, ensuring that veterans and military personnel can be part of their community’s collective reflection, no matter their location.

Jacqueline Starr emphasised, “Today, we are proud to continue that connection by helping serving personnel, veterans, and volunteers attend the services and events that mean so much to them.”
