The School Age Payment is a financial support offered to parents and guardians in Scotland to help cover the costs associated with their children’s school entry. According to a Daily Record article, this assistance aims to ease the financial burden of education for young children, but specific eligibility criteria must be met to qualify.

The amount of the payment and the conditions for eligibility are clearly outlined by the Scottish authorities, making it important for interested parties to understand the steps required to apply.

What is the School Age Payment?

The School Age Payment is part of Scotland’s Best Start Grant, designed to help families with the costs of preparing their children for school. If you’re a parent or guardian of a child born between March 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021, you might be eligible for a one-off payment of £319.80. This financial support is available to parents or carers who are receiving certain benefits.

While this payment is not a replacement for the School Clothing Grant, it’s another way the Scottish Government is trying to ease the financial burden of raising children. In fact, you can apply for both payments simultaneously, as they don’t affect each other.

The payment is made per eligible child, so if you have more than one child who qualifies, you can apply for the same amount for each one. The application period is open until February 28, 2026, which gives you plenty of time to apply, but it’s always a good idea to do so sooner rather than later.

Eligibility Requirements for the Payment

To qualify for the School Age Payment, you must meet some basic criteria. The most important one is that you need to be living in Scotland. Also, you or your partner need to be receiving one of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income Support
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

It’s important to note that Child Benefit on its own does not qualify you for the Best Start Grant or School Age Payment. As the guidance on mygov.scot explains:

Child Benefit on its own is not an accepted benefit for Best Start Grant or Best Start Foods. You must get one of the benefits from this list.

For those under 20, there is also a bit of flexibility. Even if you don’t currently receive one of the listed benefits, you could still apply for the Best Start Grant and Best Start Foods if you’re the main carer for your child.

How to Apply for the £319.80 Payment

Applications for the School Age Payment are open until February 28, 2026. There’s no rush, but it’s always good to apply sooner rather than later.

The process is pretty simple:

  1. Online: The easiest way is to apply directly on the mygov.scot website, where you can find the application form and check your eligibility.
  2. Phone: If you’re not comfortable applying online, you can call Social Security Scotland at 0800 182 2222. Their team can help you with the application process.
