Lefties, the budget fashion chain owned by Zara’s parent company, is opening a massive 58,000-square-foot store at Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex on October 29, bringing another major competitor into the UK’s low-cost clothing market.

Zara’s Budget Sister Brand Arrives at Lakeside

The new store in West Thurrock marks Lefties’ second UK location, following its British debut in Liverpool in August 2026.

According to the Echo, the retailer will celebrate its Lakeside opening with a free coffee and matcha pop-up throughout the opening weekend, giving shoppers an additional reason to visit the new location.

Lefties belongs to Inditex, the Spanish fashion group behind Zara, Bershka, and several other international clothing brands. Unlike Zara, which operates in the mainstream fashion market, Lefties focuses on affordable clothing and everyday essentials.

Its product range covers women, men, teenagers, children, and babies, with footwear and accessories available alongside clothing collections. The retailer also sells household products through its Lefties Home line.

The combination of low prices and a broad product selection has drawn comparisons with Primark, one of the UK’s most established budget fashion retailers.

From Unsold Zara Clothing to a Standalone Fashion Chain

Lefties has a history that sets it apart from many newer fashion brands.

Founded in 1999, the business originally operated as an outlet selling unsold Zara merchandise. Its early model focused on giving leftover clothing another retail destination within the Inditex group.

Over time, Lefties moved away from that approach and developed into an independent retail brand with its own clothing collections.

That evolution has positioned the chain to compete directly with other affordable fashion retailers rather than simply serving as an outlet for Zara products.

The Lakeside opening forms part of a broader British expansion. Following Liverpool and Essex, a third Lefties store is planned for Gateshead later in 2026.

Industry publication Drapers has reported that the retailer’s UK expansion is expected to create more than 400 jobs.

Lakeside Is Undergoing a £100 Million Retail Transformation

Lefties is arriving during a period of major investment at Lakeside Shopping Centre, one of Essex’s prominent retail destinations.

The center has attracted more than £100 million in tenant investment over the past three years, including £30 million during the first six months of 2026, according to the Echo.

Several recognizable brands have opened stores at Lakeside this year, including Hollister, Bershka, Urban Outfitters, Space NK, PURESEOUL, and Oliver Bonas.

The addition of Lefties expands that lineup further, particularly in the affordable fashion category.

Together, these openings are expected to contribute to an anticipated 8% increase in sales during 2026.

Lakeside is owned and operated by SGS UK Retail, which has been pursuing a strategy centered on developing distinctive shopping environments with an emphasis on community, collaboration, and individual retail experiences.

Another Major Store Opening Is Just Days Away

The arrival of Lefties is not the final addition to Lakeside’s retail lineup this fall.

The shopping center is preparing to welcome Essex’s first LEGO store on November 5, bringing another international brand to the complex.

The new LEGO location will feature several interactive shopping experiences, including a Pick and Build wall, a Build a Minifigure tower, play tables, and interactive displays.

Its opening will come exactly one week after Lefties launches its second UK store on October 29, extending a busy period of new retail arrivals at Lakeside.
