UK Officials Block Amazon Halloween Mask After Discovering a Hidden Danger to Children

A soft plastic alien mask sold through Amazon has been rejected at the UK border after safety officials identified a serious risk of suffocation. The Halloween costume accessory failed to meet ventilation requirements designed to protect children wearing masks that completely enclose their heads.

The product was examined following concerns about its design and compliance with British toy safety regulations. According to the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), the mask had insufficient openings to allow adequate airflow, while some mandatory documentation and labelling were also missing. The findings led authorities to prevent the shipment from entering the country.

Safety Tests Reveal Insufficient Ventilation in Alien Mask

The product, identified as a Soft Plastic Alien Mask, was classified as a fancy dress costume accessory intended to cover the wearer’s entire head. Its soft plastic construction meant that adequate ventilation was required to prevent airflow from becoming restricted during use.

According to the UK government’s product safety report, published on 19 October 2026, the mask provided a combined ventilation area of just 879 mm². The minimum requirement under the BS EN 71-1 safety standard for fully enclosed masks made from impermeable materials is 1,300 mm². This placed the product 421 mm² below the required threshold, a finding that prompted authorities to classify the risk as serious.

The report warned that a child placing the mask over their head could experience restricted airflow because of the inadequate ventilation. Officials identified asphyxiation as the principal hazard associated with the product.

The mask was also found to be non-compliant with the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. Inspectors noted that some of the documentation and labelling required under the regulations had not been provided. The product was identified by barcode X002N3A0U1 and listed under the manufacturer and importer name SHENHMZHENSH IXUDUDIANZ ISHANGWUYOUXI.

It was supplied in a zip-lock plastic bag bearing two different stickers. The official product safety report described its country of origin as unknown, although the accompanying product report identified China.

UK Authorities Reject Shipment Following Serious Safety Findings

The safety alert was recorded under notification number 2610-0040, with a recall or alert date of 16 October 2026. Local Authority Trading Standards notified the authorities of the product, which had been offered for sale through Amazon.

According to the Shropshire Star, the Halloween mask was destroyed at the border after officials determined that its design presented a suffocation hazard. The official government report specifically records the corrective action as rejection of the import at the border.

The distinction is relevant to the documented enforcement action. While the newspaper reported the destruction of the mask, the government notice confirms that the shipment was refused entry because it failed to satisfy applicable safety requirements.

The OPSS classified the case as a product safety report rather than providing details of a wider consumer recall. Its published findings identify the affected product, the nature of the hazard and the action taken by authorities. The report does not provide figures for the number of masks involved in the rejected import or identify any injuries associated with the product.
