Sainsbury’s will offer eligible low-income families an extra £3 a week for six weeks, providing up to £18 in additional grocery support ahead of Christmas. The supermarket says it is the first UK retailer to introduce this type of Healthy Start top-up.
Who Qualifies for Sainsbury’s Extra £3 Weekly Support?
The initiative, announced on October 20, 2026, targets families already receiving support through the government’s Healthy Start scheme in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
According to Birmingham Live, eligible customers can sign up to receive a £3 eGift card every week for six weeks, beginning November 18. The cards will arrive by email and can be redeemed both in Sainsbury’s stores and online.
The additional money is intended for purchases of fruit, vegetables, beans, and pulses, helping families increase their access to nutritious food.
Unlike a general supermarket discount, the offer specifically targets households with young children who qualify for Healthy Start assistance.
The six-week program could provide each participating household with a total of £18 in extra support, on top of its existing Healthy Start benefits.

Why Sainsbury’s Is Bringing Back the Offer Before Christmas
The retailer previously tested a similar initiative and reported measurable changes in customers’ shopping habits.
Nilani Srithran, Sainsbury’s Head of Healthy & Sustainable Diets, said:
“We know our customers want to get more fresh fruit, vegetables and fibre into family mealtimes.
“We’ve seen the difference extra support can make for families on Healthy Start, with our previous top-up trial helping customers buy an average of 13 more portions of fruit and veg per basket.
“That’s why we’re bringing back our £3 weekly top-up in the run-up to Christmas, when family budgets can face additional pressures. I’d encourage everyone on the Healthy Start scheme to find out more.”
The timing places the offer during a period when households often face higher spending on food, gifts, and seasonal expenses.
Government Welcomes the Supermarket’s Decision
The announcement has also received support from the UK government, which views Healthy Start as a means of improving access to nutritious food for families with young children.
Dame Diana Johnson, Minister of State for Public Health and Patient Safety, said:
“Every child deserves the best possible start in life.
“That’s exactly why Healthy Start matters so much to this government, helping families to put healthy food on the table.
“I’m delighted to see Sainsbury’s bring back this additional support and I encourage other retailers to follow their lead so even more families can benefit.”
Her comments highlight the possibility of similar voluntary initiatives from other supermarket chains, although no additional retailer commitments were identified in the announcement.
Food Foundation Calls for Wider Healthy Start Support
The Food Foundation, an organization focused on improving the UK’s food system, welcomed the initiative while calling for broader access to government assistance.
Anna Taylor, the organization’s Executive Director, said:
“It’s great to see Sainsbury’s adding such a generous top up to Healthy Start, and being the first mover in what we hope will be industry wide support to those on the scheme.
“This scheme reaches the most disadvantaged babies and toddlers in the country – and provides a vital nutritional safety net – but too many miss out on its benefits currently which is why we think the scheme should be urgently expanded.”
The organization’s response draws attention to families who may qualify for nutritional assistance but are not currently receiving it.
For those already enrolled in Healthy Start, Sainsbury’s confirmed that its additional £3 weekly eGift cards will begin on November 18, with the offer running for six consecutive weeks.
