Parts of Scotland could see snowfall from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, with several areas appearing in the latest Met Office forecast.
Snow Is Forecast Across Parts Of Scotland
The latest forecast indicates that snow could reach parts of Inverness, Aberdeen, Banff, Perth and Stirling. The wintry weather is expected to move westwards from around 7pm on Wednesday and continue until roughly 4am on Thursday.
Snowfall could be heaviest around Aviemore during the early hours of Thursday.
Snow Could Fall At Up To 4mm An Hour
At its heaviest, snowfall is forecast at a rate of up to 4mm per hour. The strongest flurries are expected near Aviemore, where conditions could become particularly wintry during the early morning.
The forecast remains subject to change as the weather system develops.
Five Areas Appear On The Forecast
The areas currently highlighted for snow are: Inverness, Aberdeen, Banff, Perth and Stirling.
Surrounding locations could also see wintry conditions, with parts of the Highlands among those at risk.
Lochaber And Badenoch Could Also See Wintry Weather
The forecast extends beyond the main towns and cities. Areas listed include Lochaber, Kingussie and Badenoch, where wintry showers could develop as the weather system moves across Scotland.
Local conditions will depend on temperatures and the exact path of the precipitation.
Southern Britain Faces Wetter Weather
While Scotland could see snow, much of southern Britain is expected to experience wetter conditions during the coming week. Met Office Chief Forecaster Chris Bulmer said the weekend should bring a period of dry and bright autumn weather for many areas.
Some eastern and southeastern parts of Britain could also see heavy showers, particularly overnight.
Atlantic Weather Systems Could Bring Rain And Wind
The Met Office expects high pressure to lose some of its grip during next week. Lower pressure and Atlantic weather systems are then likely to have a greater presence towards the end of the week, bringing a greater chance of rain and strong winds across the UK.
Bulmer said there remains uncertainty about how the weather pattern will develop, with more details expected to become available over the coming days.
Forecast Could Still Change
The potential snowfall is currently focused on parts of Scotland, particularly during Wednesday evening and the early hours of Thursday.
The Met Office has stressed that there is still uncertainty around the wider weather pattern for next week.
Anyone travelling through northern Scotland should therefore check the latest local forecast before setting out, particularly if travelling overnight or during the early hours of Thursday.
