The promotion comes as motorists across the UK face rising fuel costs linked to disruption in global energy markets. Prices have reached £2 per litre for the first time, amid the US-Israeli conflict with Iran and Russia’s continuing war in Ukraine. The offer provides a limited reduction in costs, although several conditions determine who can claim it.
How Tesco’s Fuel Discount Works and When It Expires
According to the Daily Mirror, customers must spend £60 or more in a qualifying Tesco store by Sunday, 18 October, to receive a fuel voucher with their shopping receipt. The coupon gives them 8p off every litre of petrol or diesel purchased at a participating Tesco filling station.
Drivers then have until Sunday, 25 October, to redeem the voucher. It must be scanned at a staffed petrol station till, meaning customers cannot use the discount through pay-at-pump facilities.
The maximum saving is £8 per transaction, compared with £10 when Tesco last ran the promotion in August. For motorists buying between 35 and 45 litres of fuel, the reduction would amount to between £2.80 and £3.60.
Tesco operates approximately 600 petrol stations across the UK, although the discount is not available at every location. Participating Tesco-branded forecourts in Great Britain and Northern Ireland accept the vouchers, while sites on the Isle of Man are excluded.
The promotion also excludes unmanned filling stations and Tesco Express locations selling Esso fuel. Customers can use Tesco’s store finder to identify suitable forecourts and check whether a staffed kiosk will be open. Only one coupon can be redeemed per fuel transaction, and the purchase must exceed £1.
Which Purchases Qualify for the £60 Spending Requirement?
The £60 threshold applies only to eligible purchases made inside Tesco stores. Online grocery deliveries, Click & Collect orders placed online and Tesco Whoosh purchases do not qualify for the promotion.
According to WalesOnline, several product categories are also excluded when calculating the minimum spend. These include lottery products, electronic top-ups, savings stamps, postage stamps, carrier bags, prescription medicines and infant formula milk.
Purchases made through separate services and counters are excluded as well. These cover cafés, tobacco kiosks, opticians, phone stores, concessions, Travel Money and Tesco Bank.
As a result, the amount displayed on a customer’s receipt may differ from the total counted towards the £60 requirement. This distinction matters for shoppers whose purchases are close to the qualifying threshold.
The offer arrives during a period of pressure on household motoring costs. Fuel prices have surpassed the previous record of 199.09p per litre, established in June 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to the same source, Tesco may not necessarily offer the cheapest fuel locally, even after the voucher has been applied. Drivers can compare nearby filling station prices through PetrolPrices.com before deciding where to refuel.
For customers intending to use the promotion, the two dates remain separate: 18 October is the final day to qualify through eligible shopping, while 25 October is the deadline for redeeming the fuel discount.
