State Pension October Surprise As DWP Confirms Two Payments Just Weeks Apart for Some Claimants

Some people receiving the new State Pension could receive two payments of £965 in October 2026, with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) following its usual four-week payment schedule. The arrangement means certain pensioners will receive £1,930 before the end of the month.

The timing is linked to the way State Pension payments are scheduled, rather than a change in entitlement. According to Birmingham Live, claimants paid at the beginning of October may receive their next instalment before the month ends. The dates depend on the final two digits of each recipient’s National Insurance number.

Why Some Pensioners Will Receive Two Payments in October

The DWP normally pays the State Pension every four weeks, rather than once per calendar month. This means payment dates move through the calendar, occasionally allowing two instalments to fall within the same month.

In October 2026, pensioners whose payments arrive on Thursday 1 October will receive another instalment on Thursday 29 October. Those paid on Friday 2 October are scheduled to receive their next payment on Friday 30 October.

According to the DWP payment arrangements reported by Birmingham Live, recipients whose National Insurance numbers end between 60 and 79 are normally paid on Thursdays. Those with numbers ending between 80 and 99 receive their payments on Fridays. The full new State Pension is worth approximately £241 a week, equivalent to a four-week payment of £965. Two such instalments therefore amount to £1,930 during October.

The new State Pension applies to men born after 1951 and women born after 1953, as outlined in the report. The payment schedule determines when eligible recipients receive their instalments, with the relevant dates falling four weeks apart. Other National Insurance number endings correspond to different weekdays. Numbers ending between 00 and 19 are associated with Monday payments, while those ending between 20 and 39 are linked to Tuesdays.

Calls for Monthly State Pension Payments Raise Questions Over the Current System

The four-week payment system has attracted criticism from the Social Market Foundation, which has called for the State Pension and Pension Credit to be paid monthly instead. According to the organisation, monthly payments could make it easier for pensioners to coordinate their income with regular household expenditure. It has also suggested that receiving larger individual instalments might create the impression of increased income.

The full State Pension is worth £12,548 in the 2026/27 financial year. Dividing that annual amount into 13 four-weekly instalments produces payments of approximately £965 each. Under a monthly arrangement, the same annual amount would instead be divided into 12 payments of approximately £1,046. The Social Market Foundation described this as an 8% increase in the amount received per instalment.

The organisation acknowledged that some pensioners appreciate the months in which two payments arrive. It also questioned whether there were strong policy reasons for maintaining the four-week system, suggesting that existing arrangements were largely practical.

Moving to monthly payments would nevertheless require decisions about how instalments should be calculated, including whether they should reflect the number of days in each month or represent one-twelfth of annual entitlement. Rules governing payments when a pension begins or following a recipient’s death would also need consideration. A different scheduling mechanism would be necessary because the current system links payment weekdays to National Insurance numbers.
