Asda has completed the rollout of electronic shelf edge labels across 517 Asda Express stores in the UK, replacing traditional paper price tickets with digital displays.
The supermarket chain installed 1.2 million digital labels across its convenience estate, allowing customers to view pricing, promotions, product information, ingredients and allergen details directly at the shelf.
Asda Moves Away From Weekly Paper Price Changes
According to The Mirror, the introduction marks the end of a long-running process where staff manually changed more than 120,000 paper price tickets every week.
The new system updates shelf information digitally, reducing the need for colleagues to replace printed labels by hand. Asda said the change will allow employees to spend more time helping customers, improving product availability and maintaining store standards.
The labels also display clearer details on pricing, unit costs, weights and promotional offers, helping shoppers access more information while they are making purchasing decisions.

Digital Labels Bring New Product Information To Store Aisles
Beyond pricing updates, the technology provides additional information for products such as bakery items, including ingredient and allergen details.
Matt Harrison, Director – Asda Express central operations, said:
“Completing the rollout of electronic shelf edge labels across our entire Express estate is a major milestone.
“By removing manual pricing tasks, we’re freeing up time for colleagues to focus on serving customers and keeping store standards high. It’s another example of how we’re modernising our stores to improve the shopping experience for customers.”
The rollout forms part of a wider move among UK supermarkets toward digital shelf technology. Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose and Co-op have also introduced or expanded similar systems across parts of their store networks.
Asda Continues Store Technology Investment
The project was delivered with VusionGroup, which provides digital shelf solutions for retailers.
Roy Horgan, UK&I CEO at Vusion said:
“We are proud to have reached this milestone with Asda, and we look forward to continuing our partnership, building on this strong foundation to further improve the in-store experience for all.”
The supermarket is also testing shelf-edge availability cameras in five larger stores before a broader rollout. The cameras monitor shelves, identify missing products, low stock levels and misplaced items, then alert colleagues so they can respond faster.
Asda has completed the installation of electronic shelf edge labels across its entire Express store estate, covering 517 locations.
