The proposed store will occupy 218 High Street, where a former car showroom is set to be converted following the approval of planning permission. The project would bring another supermarket option to the coastal town while creating around 10 full-time jobs.
According to the Express, Tesco has applied to Castle Point Council for permission to extend the opening hours beyond those originally set out in the planning documents. The earlier proposal listed operating hours of 7am to 11pm, while the latest application seeks an additional hour at both the start and end of the trading day.
The development is planned for a prominent site at the junction of High Street, Marcos Road and San Remo Road. Part of the existing building will be demolished and the remaining structure extended to create the new convenience store.
Former Car Showroom to Be Redeveloped as Tesco Express
The Canvey Island site has already secured planning permission for conversion into a Tesco Express. Work proposed as part of the scheme includes partial demolition of the former car showroom and an extension to accommodate the retail space. The development will also provide 17 car parking spaces and three cycle spaces. Around 10 full-time jobs are expected to be created once the store opens.
Tesco Express branches are smaller convenience-format stores intended mainly for shorter shopping trips. According to the Express, they typically carry around 3,000 grocery and household products rather than the wider range available in the company’s larger supermarkets.
The format is commonly used in high streets, residential areas and petrol stations, giving shoppers access to everyday grocery and household items in smaller locations. The Canvey Island branch would add to the retail options available to residents and people visiting the Essex seaside town. Its location on the high street also places the proposed shop close to an established part of the local commercial area.
Tesco Seeks Longer Daily Trading Hours
While the physical redevelopment of the site has received planning approval, the latest application concerns the premises licence and the hours during which Tesco wants the store to operate.
Planning documents had originally proposed opening between 7am and 11pm. The new licence application submitted to Castle Point Council instead requests trading from 6am until midnight, seven days a week.
According to the Express, this would extend the proposed operating period by one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening compared with the earlier plans. Castle Point Council will now consider the application as part of the licensing process. The request relates specifically to the proposed trading arrangements for the new branch and remains subject to the council’s decision.
If the licence is approved, the Tesco Express would operate under the extended hours requested in the application. The store would form part of the redevelopment already approved for the former showroom site, alongside the planned parking provision, cycle spaces and new employment.
