Nationwide Is Giving Students £100 Cash and £120 in Vouchers, but There’s a Catch

Nationwide Building Society has launched a student current account offer combining £100 in cash with £120 in Just Eat vouchers for eligible first-year students. The incentive is attached to its FlexStudent account and requires customers to meet specific deposit and card-payment conditions by December 11, 2026.

The deal arrives as several major UK banks compete for new university customers with cash payments, food vouchers, travel benefits, cashback and interest-free overdrafts. While the headline rewards differ, the overall value of an account may depend on how students expect to spend, travel and borrow during their studies.

How Nationwide’s Student Account Offer Works

According to Nationwide Building Society, students who are in, or starting, their first year of study must open a new FlexStudent account on or after July 15, 2026, while the offer remains available. They must then pay a total of £500 into the account and complete five eligible debit card payments by December 11.

The £500 does not need to be deposited in one payment. It may come from sources including a student loan, salary, savings, a gift, cash, a check or a transfer from another account. Customers may spend or withdraw the money after depositing it, provided the total amount paid into the account reaches £500.

Most purchases made in stores or online count toward the five required payments. Recurring card payments and transactions made through Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay may also qualify. Gambling payments, cryptocurrency purchases, cash withdrawals, money transfers and certain loan, lease or mortgage transactions do not count.

Once the conditions are met, Nationwide says the £100 payment will be deposited into the FlexStudent account within 14 calendar days. Eligible customers should also receive an email containing a code for the voucher portal within the same period.

The £120 food benefit is provided as one £10 Just Eat voucher each month for 12 months. Students must register for the portal and claim the first voucher within 30 calendar days. Later vouchers must be claimed during the month in which they are issued, and missed vouchers are lost. Closing the FlexStudent account also ends access to the voucher portal.

Students are not eligible if they previously received a FlexStudent offer or held an open FlexStudent or FlexGraduate account before July 15, 2026. The account also offers an arranged overdraft of up to £1,000 in the first year, £2,000 in the second and £3,000 from the third year, subject to status.

How Rival Student Accounts Compare

Lloyds Bank is offering up to £120 in Deliveroo vouchers alongside £100 in cash, subject to its conditions. NatWest has increased the cashback attached to its student account from £85 to £100 and continues to provide a tastecard.

Santander offers a four-year 16-25 Railcard valued at £115, while customers may also register for Santander Boosts to receive cashback. TSB pays 5% AER, or 4.89% gross, on the first £500 held in its student account. HSBC provides access to dining, leisure and shopping offers through its Home & Away program but does not include a specific student reward of the same kind.

According to Caitlyn Eastell, a personal finance analyst at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, students should assess the complete account rather than choosing solely on the basis of cash or vouchers. She said an interest-free overdraft may deliver greater value across a degree than a one-time incentive.

NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland offer arranged overdrafts of up to £3,250 by the end of a degree. HSBC and Nationwide provide limits rising to £3,000. Eastell said overdrafts should be treated as a financial safety net rather than additional spending money because all borrowed funds must eventually be repaid.

The most suitable benefit may depend on individual habits. According to Eastell, regular travelers may save more with Santander’s Railcard, while students who frequently order food or eat out may find greater use in the offers from Nationwide, Lloyds or NatWest.
