Nine UK regions are set to experience heavy rain this weekend as temperatures fall after a prolonged period of sunshine. The Met Office forecasts a band of rain moving across the country from Saturday, with cooler and unsettled conditions expected through Sunday.
Rain to Move Across Scotland and Northern England
The first rainfall is expected to arrive on Scotland’s north-west coast during the early hours of Saturday before spreading southwards. The Met Office forecasts a change from the warm and sunny conditions seen during the week, with cooler temperatures, periods of rain and stronger winds in some areas.
No weather warnings have been issued, but several regions are expected to see significant rainfall during the weekend. The areas forecast to experience heavy rain include: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, North West England, South West England, North East England, Yorkshire and the Humber, The Midlands, East Anglia and Central England.
Weekend Rain Timeline Across the UK
Rain will begin moving south-east from Northern Ireland and Scotland at around 7am on Saturday, according to Met Office forecasts. By late morning, parts of northern England are expected to see rainfall, followed by wetter conditions across North West England and North Wales during the afternoon. Rain will also reach Yorkshire and the Humber later in the day.
Much of England and Wales should experience a drier Saturday evening, although further rain is expected across Scotland and Northern Ireland overnight. On Sunday morning, rain will return across parts of Wales, North West England, Yorkshire and the Midlands. The wet conditions are expected to spread further south, reaching the South West of England later in the morning.
Heaviest Rain Expected on Sunday Afternoon
The Met Office forecasts the most widespread rainfall around 1pm on Sunday, when much of the UK could be covered by cloud and showers. Most areas should become drier by the evening, although the heaviest rainfall of the weekend is expected around East Yorkshire near Hull, where between 16mm and 32mm of rain could fall.
London and the South East are expected to avoid the heaviest downpours, although scattered showers are possible in the capital and nearby counties.
Temperatures Set to Drop After Sunny Spell
The weather change will also bring cooler temperatures. Forecast highs are expected to reach around 23°C on Saturday before falling to approximately 20°C on Sunday. The weekend forecast marks a shift away from the recent sunny conditions, with unsettled weather affecting large parts of the UK before conditions potentially stabilise in the following days.
