The recall applies to a single batch of Morrisons Maple & Bacon Back of the Net crisps sold in 140g packs. The warning is specifically aimed at people with a milk allergy or intolerance, who could face a health risk if they eat the product. The withdrawal highlights the role of food labelling in protecting consumers with allergies and the procedures retailers follow when products do not meet food safety requirements. According to the FSA, the issue relates to incorrect packaging rather than the recipe itself.
Packaging Error Leads to Allergy Alert
According to the Food Standards Agency, Morrisons is recalling its Morrisons Maple & Bacon Back of the Net crisps because some packs may contain milk that is not mentioned on the label. The agency said that some packs may have been filled with the wrong product, resulting in the presence of milk despite its absence from the ingredient information.
The recall affects 140g packs with a best-before date of 22 August 2026. The FSA said the undeclared allergen makes the product “a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.”
The agency has classified the incident as an Allergy Alert and confirmed that Morrisons has been advised to contact relevant allergy support organisations to help notify affected consumers. According to the FSA, the retailer has also issued point-of-sale notices in its stores explaining the reason for the recall and advising customers on the steps they should take.
Customers who have purchased the affected product and have a milk allergy or intolerance are advised not to eat it. Instead, they should return it to the store where it was purchased to receive a full refund.
Morrisons Urges Customers to Return Affected Packs
Morrisons has confirmed that no receipt is required for customers seeking a refund for the recalled crisps. According to the retailer, no other products are affected by the issue. A Morrisons spokesperson said: “Please do not eat this product and return it to your nearest store for a full refund. We don’t need a receipt.”
The spokesperson also stated: “No other products are affected by this issue. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and assure customers of our continuing commitment to the highest standard of product quality and safety.”
The FSA explains that food products may either be withdrawn from sale or recalled from customers if there is a problem that means they should not be sold. A withdrawal removes products from shop shelves, while a recall asks consumers who have already bought the item to return it.
According to the FSA, allergy alerts are issued when food presents a risk because allergen labelling is missing or incorrect, or where another food allergy risk has been identified. The agency also notes that, in some circumstances, it issues a Food Alert for Action, providing local authorities with details of any specific measures required to protect consumers. In this case, the advice remains limited to the identified batch of Morrisons Maple & Bacon Back of the Net crisps with the specified best-before date of 22 August 2026.
