Parents across the UK are being urged to stop using and immediately return a children’s toy after tests found unsafe levels of a toxic chemical, prompting an urgent recall and safety warning from regulators.

Toy Found To Contain Chemical Above Legal Limit

The product, “Squeezy Dumplings”, has been recalled after testing identified benzene levels above the UK legal safety threshold. The toy was sold by Cardiff-based wholesaler Samsons Cash and Carry Ltd and is understood to have been manufactured in China before being distributed through retail and online channels.

Laboratory testing found approximately 20mg per kilogram of benzene in the product, compared with the legal limit of 5mg per kilogram. Benzene is a highly flammable, colourless chemical with a sweet, gasoline-like smell. It is classified as a known carcinogen and has been linked to serious health conditions, including leukaemia, following prolonged or repeated exposure.

Urgent Safety Warning Issued To Families

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued an urgent recall notice for the product. Consumers are being instructed to immediately stop using the toy and keep it out of reach of children until it is returned or safely disposed of.

Parents and carers are advised to contact the retailer for instructions on how to return affected products. Officials have stressed that all toys sold in the UK must comply with strict chemical safety regulations designed to protect children from exposure to hazardous substances.

Distribution And Retail Channels

The recalled item, marketed as “Squeezy Dumplings”, was supplied through Samsons Cash and Carry Ltd, a Cardiff-based wholesaler. The company distributes products through both physical retail and online platforms, meaning the toy may have reached consumers through multiple sales channels.

Regulators have not indicated that other products are affected at this stage, but consumers are being advised to carefully check product packaging and recall notices.

Rising Number Of Toy Safety Alerts

The recall forms part of a wider pattern of safety alerts involving imported children’s products sold in the UK. In recent months, regulators have issued several recalls after testing identified hazardous substances in toys and learning kits sold through online marketplaces and third-party sellers.

Some earlier products were found to contain asbestos in certain cases, leading to increased scrutiny of imported goods entering the UK market.

Online Sales Under Scrutiny

Consumer groups have raised concerns about the speed at which unsafe products are removed from online marketplaces once safety issues are identified. Some recalled items have previously been listed through third-party sellers on major platforms before regulatory action led to their removal.

Authorities continue to work with retailers and online platforms to strengthen monitoring and improve product safety enforcement.

Ongoing Monitoring

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has confirmed that it will continue monitoring children’s products across the UK market. Parents are being encouraged to regularly check official recall lists and report any potentially unsafe toys to regulators.
