MWH Wine Merchants Limited, an independent wine wholesaler based in Reading, has entered liquidation after liquidators were formally appointed earlier this month. The company’s website is no longer accessible, marking an abrupt halt to operations for the long-running wine merchant.

The business, also known as MWH Wines, specialised in fine and rare wines and offered worldwide shipping to customers. According to reports published on 22 May, the company had built a strong reputation among customers, with multiple five-star reviews praising its service and delivery standards.

MWH Wine Merchants Limited officially entered liquidation on 13 May, when Thomas Edward Guthrie and John William Rimmer of BRI Business Recovery were appointed to oversee the winding-up process. According to the published reports, liquidation involves dissolving a company and selling its assets to repay creditors and shareholders where possible.

The company’s closure appears to have happened quickly. Its website, previously used to sell wine, beer, spirits and other alcoholic products, is now offline. No public statement from the business itself was included in the reports.

Customer Reviews Reflected a Strong Reputation before Collapse

Before entering liquidation, MWH Wines had established itself as an award-winning independent merchant dealing in fine and rare wines. The company also offered international shipping, serving customers beyond the UK market.

According to customer reviews cited in reports, the business was particularly valued for specialist orders and customer service. One review published in December 2025 described how director Michael Hall allegedly arranged a last-minute birthday wine delivery within 12 hours of ordering. The customer wrote that they “could not recommend MWH Wines more highly”.

Another review from April 2024 referred to the purchase of vintage port wines. The customer stated that the company supplied bottles from a specific birth year and delivered them within several days, with original packaging and labels preserved. A further review, dating from August 2021, described a customer purchasing a wine for a 15th wedding anniversary after receiving a recommendation that matched a stated budget. The review praised both the speed of delivery and the condition of the bottle upon arrival.

The reports noted that the Reading-based business held several five-star ratings on Trustpilot. No indication was given in the source material about when financial difficulties first emerged or how many employees may have been affected.

Alcohol Sector Continues to Face Business Closures

The liquidation of MWH Wine Merchants comes only months after another drinks business in Britain entered a similar process. According to the reports, Chase Distillery Limited also went into liquidation earlier this year.

Notice of Chase Distillery’s liquidation was published in a government gazette on 27 March. The distillery, owned by multinational drinks company Diageo, had reportedly produced around half a million bottles annually before restructuring measures led to the closure of its original production site.

For MWH Wines, the immediate visible sign of the company’s collapse has been the disappearance of its online presence. Customers attempting to access the wholesaler’s website are now met with an unavailable page, while the liquidation process continues under the supervision of BRI Business Recovery.
