Dunelm has issued an urgent warning to customers after recalling 27 products sold in stores and online due to potential asbestos contamination. The retailer confirmed the affected items were available between 2019 and 2026 and urged shoppers to stop using them immediately.

Dunelm recalls 27 products after safety concerns

The recall affects a range of decorative doorstops sold across the UK, including animal-themed and fabric designs. According to Dunelm, the sand sealed inside the products may contain a “small quantity of asbestos”, a substance banned in the UK because of the health risks linked to exposure.

In a statement published on its website, the retailer said: “The safety of our customers is very important to us, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.” The Government’s product safety website also confirmed the products failed to comply with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

What customers have been told to do

Dunelm advised customers to stop using any affected products immediately and either dispose of them safely or return them to stores for a full refund. If the doorstop is undamaged, customers are being told to place it inside a heavy-duty plastic bag and securely seal it with tape before disposal.

For damaged products where the sand is exposed, Dunelm advised people to use wet cloths to collect the material while wearing gloves and a mask to reduce the risk of dust spreading. The retailer also warned customers to keep children away from any areas where sand may have spilled.

Government warning issued over asbestos risk

Government safety officials confirmed the products originated from China and warned that asbestos exposure can present health risks even at low levels. The official recall notice stated the products had been withdrawn from sale and recalled from customers as a precautionary measure.

Customers seeking further information have been advised to contact Dunelm directly through its customer service channels or visit the retailer’s website for disposal and refund guidance.
