Lidl is making waves in the UK retail scene with the launch of Lidl Pay, a new digital payment system integrated directly into its Lidl Plus loyalty app. With the new feature now available in nearly 980 stores, shoppers can pay for their groceries using their smartphones, making for a faster, more convenient shopping experience.
The introduction of Lidl Pay follows a growing trend in the retail industry towards digital wallets, aligning with consumer demand for faster, more efficient checkout methods. According to Lidl GB, this new payment functionality enhances the shopping experience by offering customers a seamless way to redeem offers and pay securely, all in one app. It reflects the supermarket’s broader strategy to streamline the in-store process, offering flexibility for different shopping preferences.
A Smarter Way to Pay at Lidl
With the integration of Lidl Pay into the Lidl Plus app, customers can now make secure, contactless payments at checkout by simply scanning their phones. This feature not only saves time but also ensures a high level of security, with user data protected by top-tier encryption and certified payment providers.
To use the new payment option, customers must first link their bank cards to the app by navigating to the ‘My Wallet’ section within the Lidl Plus app. From there, shoppers can activate Lidl Pay, enabling them to pay for their shopping at both manned tills and self-checkout stations. According to Shyam Unarket, Customer Relations Director at Lidl GB, the integration of this payment option is a significant step forward in the retailer’s “digital evolution”, reflecting its commitment to enhancing the customer journey.

The launch of Lidl Pay also comes as Lidl Plus continues to see growing engagement. The app has reportedly experienced a surge in active users, with monthly active users growing by over a third in the past year. The loyalty app offers personalised discounts, coupons, and deals, further incentivising shoppers to use it, potentially boosting customer loyalty and retention in the long term.
Mystery Boxes and Charitable Causes
Alongside the launch of Lidl Pay, the supermarket is also rolling out a quirky promotion that’s already sparking interest among bargain hunters. Lidl is offering mystery boxes priced at £20, with each box containing a selection of items worth over £100. These boxes, available in limited quantities, are filled with an eclectic mix of products, from kitchen gadgets to tech accessories.
However, the excitement doesn’t end there. All proceeds from the sale of these mystery boxes will be donated to the NSPCC, adding a charitable twist to the promotion. This initiative not only aligns with Lidl’s ongoing social responsibility efforts but also taps into the growing trend of mystery purchases, which continue to captivate consumers looking for unexpected deals.
