Campaigners are urging the UK Government to introduce statutory paid menstrual leave for workers affected by endometriosis and adenomyosis, two chronic conditions that impact around 1.5 million people across the country. With symptoms ranging from severe pelvic pain to debilitating fatigue, those suffering from these conditions often struggle to maintain normal work routines, sparking a push for policy change.

This call for paid leave follows similar initiatives in other countries, including Portugal, where legislation has already been enacted to provide employees experiencing acute menstrual pain with paid time off. Now, thousands are rallying in the UK to demand a similar approach, highlighting the need for guaranteed support for those living with these conditions.

The Case for Statutory Menstrual Leave

Endometriosis and adenomyosis are common yet frequently underdiagnosed conditions affecting women. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), an estimated one in ten women in the UK live with endometriosis, though the condition remains severely underdiagnosed, with only two percent of women receiving an official diagnosis by the age of 35. Symptoms include intense pelvic pain, heavy periods, and fatigue, which can disrupt daily activities and impair professional productivity.

Adenomyosis, a related condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows within the walls of the uterus, shares many of these symptoms, further complicating the lives of those affected. Both conditions can have a significant impact on a person’s ability to work, especially during particularly painful episodes.

Advocates for menstrual leave argue that paid time off would allow employees to recover without the added stress of worrying about income loss. In Portugal, the law now guarantees employees suffering from such conditions up to three days of paid leave per month.

What the Petition Calls for

The petition for statutory menstrual leave in the UK, which has already garnered more than 3,450 signatures, outlines a clear set of demands. The proposed policy would guarantee up to three days of paid leave each month for individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of endometriosis or adenomyosis.

Supporters of the petition, including advocacy groups and individuals with the condition, argue that this measure would provide necessary relief while preventing potential discrimination in the workplace.

The petition further calls for a straightforward process: a single medical certificate confirming the condition would be sufficient for employees to access the benefit, ensuring that workers are not burdened with excessive paperwork. Full employment protections would also apply, ensuring that those taking leave would not face any loss of pay, benefits, or seniority. These protections are seen as essential to maintaining a supportive work environment for those who suffer from these chronic conditions.
