The expanded action now covers millions of pounds of frozen foods produced by Ajinomoto Foods North America, including products sold under multiple retail brands. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), no confirmed injuries have been reported.
The recall was first announced on February 19, 2026, when Ajinomoto Foods North America pulled approximately 3,370,530 pounds of frozen not-ready-to-eat chicken fried rice products. The company later broadened the recall on March 3, bringing the total amount of affected products to approximately 36,987,575 pounds.
Trader Joe’s informed customers about the expanded withdrawal through a March 3 customer notice, advising consumers not to use or eat the affected products and to return them to any store for a full refund or discard them.
Expanded Recall Covers Multiple Trader Joe’s Frozen Products
The expanded recall includes Trader Joe’s Chicken Fried Rice, Vegetable Fried Rice, Japanese Style Fried Rice, and Chicken Shu Mai. According to Trader Joe’s customer notice, the listed best-by date ranges are Chicken Fried Rice from March 4, 2026, through February 10, 2027; Vegetable Fried Rice from February 28, 2026, through November 19, 2026; Japanese Style Fried Rice from February 28, 2026, through November 14, 2026; and Chicken Shu Mai from March 13, 2026, through October 23, 2026.
FSIS later updated the recall information to clarify that products bearing the identified lot numbers are included regardless of their printed best-by dates. The agency also noted that the expanded withdrawal added approximately 33,617,045 pounds of ready-to-eat and not-ready-to-eat chicken and pork fried rice, ramen, and shu mai products manufactured by Ajinomoto Foods North America.
The recall extends beyond Trader Joe’s products. According to the updated FSIS notice, affected foods were also sold under the Ajinomoto, Kroger, Ling Ling, and Tai Pei brands. For Trader Joe’s Vegetable Fried Rice alone, the recall covers approximately 9,885,240 pounds, or 411,885 cases. The product is packaged in one-pound flexible bags with UPC 00521482 and was distributed to stores across numerous states.

Glass Contamination Prompted Voluntary Action
According to FSIS, the recall was initiated after Ajinomoto Foods North America notified the agency that it had received four consumer complaints reporting glass found in frozen chicken fried rice products. The foreign material has been described as glass fragments measuring approximately one to three centimeters in length and two to four millimeters in width.
Ajinomoto Foods North America stated earlier that the expanded recall was initiated “out of an abundance of caution.” The company also said there had been no injuries or adverse reactions reported and that it was continuing to work closely with USDA officials.
The affected Trader Joe’s products were distributed nationwide, while one recalled Ajinomoto product was exported only to Canada. FSIS said some withdrawed products could still be in consumers’ freezers and advised customers not to consume them.
The withdrawal remains ongoing and is classified as a Class II recall. Consumers with affected products are advised to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund, while anyone concerned about a possible injury should contact a healthcare provider, according to FSIS.
