Costco has announced the voluntary recall of Topo Chico mineral water in Texas and Louisiana following concerns over potential Pseudomonas contamination. The recall, initiated by Coca-Cola, affects a specific lot of the popular sparkling beverage sold in bulk packs earlier this year.
The notice underscores the importance of consumer safety as authorities warn that certain individuals may face heightened health risks from exposure to the bacteria. The recall applies to a limited number of bottles, but Costco is urging customers to check their purchases and return affected products for a full refund.
What Products Are Included in the Recall
According to Costco, the recall affects Topo Chico mineral water sold in 18-packs of 16.9-ounce glass bottles (item number 1439351) between May 20 and May 29, 2025, at select warehouse locations in Texas and Louisiana. Impacted bottles can be identified by lot code 13A2541, which is printed both on the case packaging and the neck of each bottle.
The decision to recall the product was made voluntarily by Coca-Cola, the beverage’s manufacturer. In a statement issued to members, Costco emphasized: “The safety and quality of the products we offer our consumers is our top priority.” Customers who purchased the recalled product are advised not to drink it and to return it to their local warehouse for a full refund. For additional information, concerned consumers can contact Coca-Cola at 1-800-438-2653.
Health Risks Associated With Pseudomonas Contamination
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes Pseudomonas as a group of bacteria typically found in soil and water. While the bacteria pose little risk to healthy individuals, those with weakened immune systems, hospitalized patients, or individuals using medical devices are at a higher risk of serious infection.
According to the CDC, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common strain to infect humans and is known for its resistance to many antibiotics. Infections can affect various parts of the body, including the blood, lungs, urinary tract, and digestive system. Reported symptoms vary by the site of infection but may include fever, inflammation, pain, and discharge from the affected area, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Medical experts advise anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming or handling the recalled product to seek immediate medical attention. While minor infections may resolve with treatment, vulnerable individuals can develop severe complications if left untreated. Customers are urged to review their purchases, especially if they bought Topo Chico mineral water during the specified dates.
