A voluntary recall of several bread products by Hillside Orchard Farms has triggered a Class I risk warning from the FDA. This action comes after concerns about the undeclared presence of eggs, a major food allergen, in their baked goods. The recall, which affects consumers in multiple states, underscores the ongoing risks posed by allergens in food products.
On July 22, Hillside Orchard Farms Inc. issued a voluntary recall for a range of baked goods sold at farm markets and roadside stands across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. According to the FDA, the bread products were found to have undeclared eggs, posing significant risks to individuals with egg allergies. As of August 20, the recall was categorised as a Class I risk—a classification reserved for situations where there is a reasonable probability that consuming the product will lead to serious health consequences, including life-threatening reactions.
The Severity of Undeclared Allergens
Eggs are one of the nine major food allergens, which also include milk, peanuts, and wheat. According to the FDA, the failure to declare eggs on product labels is a serious oversight, as it puts consumers with allergies at risk of anaphylaxis—a potentially fatal condition that can lead to respiratory failure.
The affected products include popular items such as:
- Apple Bread, Banana Nut Bread, and Blueberry Fritters.

These products, distributed between November 18, 2024, and July 16, 2025, had use-by dates up to July 23, 2025. Hillside Orchard Farms initiated the recall following an investigation by the FDA, which revealed the allergen issue. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the affected items.
The Growing Concern Over Allergic Reactions
The recall comes at a time when food allergies, particularly those involving common allergens like eggs, are becoming an increasing public health concern. Dr. Sebastian Lighvani, Director of New York Allergy & Asthma PLLC, noted that the rate of anaphylactic reactions has surged in recent years.
“Every three minutes in the United States, someone ends up in an emergency room because of an allergic reaction after accidental ingestion of food. So even when we try hard, these reactions are happening. And if you look at the incidence of anaphylaxis, it has skyrocketed in the last five, 10, 20 years. And in the U.S., there’s like a 300 to 400 percent increase in the rates of anaphylaxis to foods.” Dr. Lighvani said. As awareness of food allergies grows, ensuring accurate food labelling has become more critical than ever.
Consumers who purchased the affected bread products are urged to return them for a full refund. The recall remains active, with Hillside Orchard Farms working closely with the FDA to address the issue and prevent further exposure.
