Costco has rolled out a subtle but meaningful update that could make every warehouse visit more convenient for millions of shoppers. The retailer has expanded its digital wallet functionality, allowing members to link any single Visa card to their digital membership card instead of being limited to the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi. The change reflects Costco’s steady investment in digital tools that simplify shopping while preserving the warehouse model that has made the company one of the world’s most successful retailers.

Costco Broadens Its Digital Wallet Beyond the Costco Credit Card

The latest update represents one of the biggest improvements to Costco’s mobile experience since the introduction of the digital membership card. For years, members who wanted the fastest checkout experience through the Costco app were largely limited to linking the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi. With the new expansion, members can now choose any Visa card and combine payment with their digital membership in a single scan at warehouse registers, pharmacies, and fuel stations. The change reduces friction during checkout while maintaining Costco’s long-standing policy of accepting Visa credit cards in its U.S. warehouses. According to Costco’s website,

“Now you can use any single Visa card in your Costco Digital Wallet — including your Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi. Pick one and use it at fuel stations, pharmacies, and warehouse registers to speed up your checkout,” the company announced.

The feature builds on digital upgrades that have gradually transformed the Costco app into more than just a digital membership card, giving members faster access to services without changing the warehouse shopping experience they already know.

The update follows comments made by Costco Chief Executive Officer Ron Vachris during the company’s third-quarter earnings call, where he outlined the retailer’s expanding digital strategy.

“The enhancements we have made include improvements to the mobile wallet, the introduction of digital membership card with quick access on the Costco app, and the rollout of our shopping cart prescan tool internationally,” he said.

Those improvements illustrate Costco’s preference for measured technological progress instead of sweeping overhauls.

Costco’s Technology Strategy Extends Far Beyond Faster Checkout

While customers will notice the payment upgrade at the register, much of Costco’s technology investment is happening behind the scenes. The company has increasingly focused on using data and artificial intelligence to improve inventory planning, demand forecasting, and product availability across its warehouse network. Rather than pursuing technology simply because competitors are doing so, Costco is applying it to strengthen the efficiency of its core business. Speaking at Constellation Connected Enterprise 2025, Costco AI executive Indy Cho explained how customer purchases generate valuable information that helps guide inventory decisions across individual markets.

“Understanding the demand at a localized level is an incredibly challenging task. Every time you shop, that’s a demand signal. We get that back to buyers, and we they go through a tremendous amount of analysis to figure out how much product needs to get to the right location,” said Cho. He added, “The bar for a higher level of accuracy is absolutely necessary but that doesn’t mean we don’t stop experimenting.”

Those remarks illustrate how Costco is connecting customer behavior with supply chain operations in an effort to keep products available while minimizing inefficiencies.

The company’s measured approach reflects its broader philosophy of improving operational performance without disrupting the shopping experience that members value. Instead of introducing highly visible technology for its own sake, Costco appears focused on tools that solve practical problems, whether by reducing checkout times or helping warehouses receive inventory that better matches local demand.

Analysts Say Costco Is Blending Digital Innovation With Its Warehouse Model

Industry analysts believe Costco’s strategy demonstrates that digital transformation does not require abandoning the warehouse format that has fueled decades of growth. Morningstar analyst Brett Husslein argued that the retailer is successfully integrating modern technology into its existing business rather than replacing it. “Costco is showing it can layer digital and AI capabilities onto its warehouse model,” he wrote. That assessment reflects the company’s ability to enhance convenience while preserving the value proposition built around memberships, bulk purchasing, and efficient warehouse operations.

Other retail experts see additional opportunities for Costco to improve the customer experience. Neil Saunders, Managing Director at GlobalData, believes there is still room for expansion in several digital services.

“In my view, he is correct in his assessment. Costco can improve in areas like collect-from-store, checking what’s in stock at the warehouse, and making the e-commerce process easier,” he wrote on RetailWire.

As consumers increasingly expect real-time inventory information and smoother online shopping experiences, those capabilities could become natural extensions of Costco’s technology roadmap.

The retailer’s gradual pace has also received support from technology leaders who argue that thoughtful implementation often produces better long-term results than rapid experimentation. RTM Nexus Chief Executive Officer Dominick Miserandino praised Costco’s disciplined strategy, saying,

“Costco is all about the customer experience and keeping those members happy and lifetime members. So being slower to adapt, if some say it’s a criticism, they are adjusting and going with the market to make sure that customer experience is seamless and the changes are done at the right time in the right place,” he told TheStreet.

As Costco continues expanding its digital capabilities, the latest wallet update offers another example of how incremental improvements can deliver meaningful benefits for millions of members while reinforcing the retailer’s reputation for practical innovation.
