Walmart has announced a nationwide recall of a widely sold fitness product following multiple safety incidents. The recall involves adjustable dumbbells that were available in stores and online, after reports linked the product to several injuries.
Walmart Recall Triggered by Safety Incidents
The product at the centre of the recall is the FitRx SmartBell Quick-Select 5–52.5 lbs adjustable dumbbell, designed for home workouts. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 115 incidents have been reported where parts of the equipment failed during use.
At least six injuries have been confirmed so far. These include broken toes, bruises, contusions and cuts, highlighting the potential severity of the issue when the product malfunctions.
A Defect That Can Cause Impact Injuries
The problem stems from the weight plates detaching from the handle while the dumbbells are in use. This creates a direct impact risk, as the plates can fall unexpectedly and strike the user or nearby surfaces.
Because the product is intended for lifting and repetitive movement, the risk increases during active use. The defect has raised concerns about how securely the components remain locked during workouts.
Products Sold Nationwide in 2024
The recall applies to model 8361, covering specific serial number ranges identified by the manufacturer. These dumbbells were sold at Walmart locations across the United States and through Walmart’s website between January and November 2024.
The product was priced at around $100, making it a popular option for consumers looking for adjustable, space-saving gym equipment at home.
Steps Consumers Need to Follow
Customers who purchased the affected dumbbells are being urged to stop using them immediately. The manufacturer, Tzumi Electronics, is offering a free replacement, including both the dumbbell and its storage tray.
To receive the replacement, consumers must register their product through the official recall process. They are also instructed to clearly mark the product as “recalled” before disposing of it, once their claim has been validated.
Oversight and Response From Authorities
The recall has been issued in coordination with the CPSC, which monitors product safety and oversees recalls involving consumer goods. The agency has warned that continued use of the affected dumbbells could lead to further injuries if the defect occurs during exercise.
The volume of incident reports played a key part in triggering the recall, as it indicated a recurring issue rather than isolated cases.
