A £35 energy-saving gadget, such as a Chimney Sheep, can help fireplace owners save £145 annually on energy bills. This affordable investment was highlighted by 93-year-old Bob Dickman from Cumbria, who shared his experience with the gadget during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
A Cost-Effective Solution: Bob’s Experience with the Chimney Sheep
Bob, who lives in a historic former schoolhouse built in 1713, bought the Chimney Sheep for £25 in 2014. The device, a rectangular draught excluder for chimneys, has significantly reduced heat loss through his fireplace flue, saving him £150 annually. Over 11 years of use, Bob estimates it has saved him hundreds of pounds, making it one of his most cost-effective home improvements.
“This contraption has made a real difference as it means my home is a lot less draughty.”
The Benefits of the Chimney Sheep: Keeping Heat In and Soot Out
The Chimney Sheep, made of wool, is inserted into the flue when the fireplace is not in use. It prevents:
- Heat loss up the chimney.
- Soot from falling during heavy rain or snow.
Bob uses it with his Baxi-type fireplace, chosen for its efficient heat output. Despite his advanced age, he appreciates the visual reminder the Chimney Sheep provides, ensuring he removes it before lighting a fire.
Enhancing Energy Efficiency: Bob’s Home Improvements
Beyond the Chimney Sheep, Bob has made several improvements to his 3-bedroom home:
- Loft insulation and double glazing.
- Heavier curtains on windows.
- Draught excluders for doors.
These measures have further helped him manage heating costs in the face of rising energy prices.
Reducing Energy Bills: A Call for Support for Pensioners
Bob emphasized the importance of finding ways to reduce energy bills, especially for pensioners who may struggle to afford rising heating costs. He highlighted the need for older adults to take advantage of government support, such as the Winter Fuel Payment.
“Given the cost-of-living crisis, it is more important than ever that we all find ways to keep costs down.”
Although Bob plans to replace his Chimney Sheep after 11 years, he praises it as a durable and effective solution, helping him save hundreds of pounds while keeping his historic home warm and comfortable.
