Millions of New York households are beginning to receive energy rebate checks worth up to $200, with payments scheduled to continue arriving through December. The state is distributing the money automatically, meaning eligible residents do not need to apply or submit additional paperwork.
Millions of New York Households Are Receiving Payments
The checks are part of the Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate (POWER) program, a state initiative designed to help households manage energy expenses.
According to PIX11, approximately 8.2 million households are expected to receive payments under the program, which was included in New York’s 2027 state budget and signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The first checks began going out on September 21, with additional mailings scheduled through December. That distribution period means eligible residents may receive their payments at different times.
The program provides direct financial relief rather than a discount applied to monthly utility bills. Recipients receive a physical check in the mail, allowing them to use the money toward electricity, heating, or other household expenses.

How Much Money Will New Yorkers Receive?
The amount each household receives depends on its tax filing status and reported income.
Under the program’s eligibility rules, payments fall into three categories:
- $200: Married couples filing jointly with incomes below $150,000.
- $150: Joint filers reporting incomes between $150,000 and $300,000.
- $100: Single filers with incomes below $150,000.
These thresholds determine the rebate amount, rather than a household’s actual monthly electricity or heating costs.
A qualifying married couple earning less than $150,000, for example, receives twice the payment available to an eligible single filer under the same income threshold.
The program does not calculate individual payments based on how much energy a household consumes. Instead, it uses tax information to establish eligibility and payment amounts.
Who Qualifies for the Energy Rebate Check?
Receiving a POWER rebate depends on meeting several requirements tied to 2024 New York State income tax records.
Residents must have filed a timely New York State resident income tax return for the 2024 tax year. They must also have been full-year residents of New York during that year.
Income must fall within the program’s qualifying thresholds, and recipients cannot have been claimed as dependents on another taxpayer’s return.
These conditions mean that living in New York today does not automatically establish eligibility. The state uses a taxpayer’s residency and filing information from 2024 to determine whether a payment is due.
Residents who did not file a New York State income tax return for 2024 are not eligible to receive a check under the announced rules.
Do Residents Need to Apply or Request Their Checks?
Eligible taxpayers do not need to complete an application to receive their rebate.
New York is issuing payments automatically using information already available through state income tax filings.
The program also does not require residents to submit utility bills or demonstrate how much they spend on energy each month.
Because payments are being delivered by mail, residents should watch for a physical check rather than expect the rebate to appear as a credit on their utility account.
The mailing schedule extends through December, so not receiving a check immediately does not necessarily mean a household has been excluded.
For qualifying New Yorkers, the process requires no additional registration: rebate checks are automatically issued and mailed to eligible residents.
