The payments coincide with another announcement affecting beneficiaries nationwide. Federal officials are expected to reveal the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on the same day, determining how much monthly Social Security benefits will increase next year. Current forecasts suggest an adjustment larger than the 2.8 percent increase implemented in January 2026.
Social Security Payment Schedule Determines Who Receives Benefits This Week
According to Newsweek, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will distribute its next round of October payments on October 14 to beneficiaries born between the first and tenth days of any month. Retirement, survivor and disability benefits generally follow a schedule based on recipients’ birth dates.
This arrangement applies to most beneficiaries who began collecting Social Security after April 30, 1997. Payments are distributed across three scheduled dates during October, depending on when recipients were born.
Different arrangements apply to people who started receiving benefits before May 1997. Those beneficiaries, along with individuals collecting both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), generally receive their Social Security payments on the third day of each month.
SSI recipients received their October payments on October 1. Unlike retirement benefits, SSI provides financial assistance to eligible older adults and people with disabilities who have limited income and financial resources.
Payment amounts vary considerably. According to Newsweek, monthly retirement benefits depend on lifetime earnings, employment history and the age at which an individual begins claiming Social Security.
The maximum retirement benefit available in 2026 reaches $5,181 for qualifying workers. These maximum amounts assume a worker earned at least the maximum taxable earnings throughout their career, beginning at age 22.
Most retirees receive substantially less. The average monthly benefit for retired workers currently stands at $2,087.52. Beneficiaries who do not receive their payments on schedule are advised by the SSA to wait three additional mailing days before contacting the agency.

October 14 Inflation Report Will Determine the 2027 Social Security Increase
The October payment distribution comes alongside the anticipated announcement of the 2027 COLA, which adjusts Social Security benefits to reflect inflation.
The adjustment is calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Officials compare average inflation readings from July, August and September with figures from the corresponding period of the previous year.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to release September’s inflation data at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on October 14. The SSA is expected to announce the adjustment shortly afterward.
According to forecasts from AARP and The Senior Citizens League, the increase could reach 3.6 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively. Both estimates exceed the 2.8 percent adjustment introduced in 2026 and the 2.5 percent increase applied in 2025.
For someone receiving approximately $2,086 monthly, a 3.5 percent adjustment would add around $73, bringing benefits to roughly $2,159. A 3.6 percent increase would add approximately $75, raising the payment to $2,161. Either adjustment would represent the largest percentage increase since the 8.7 percent rise implemented in January 2023. The final figure will determine benefit increases taking effect with payments payable in January 2027.
