Walmart has recalled approximately 4.4 million grill brushes after federal safety regulators warned that their metal bristles could detach, contaminate food and cause serious internal injuries requiring surgery. The recall affects several products sold nationwide over nearly five years.
Why Millions of Walmart Grill Brushes Are Being Recalled
The recall, announced on October 1, 2026, involves Expert Grill wire-bristle brushes sold at Walmart stores and through the retailer’s website.
According to
Fox Business, the products are being withdrawn because their metal bristles can break loose during routine grill cleaning. Those fragments may remain on cooking surfaces and eventually become embedded in food.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that accidentally swallowing these bristles could cause internal injuries severe enough to require surgery.
Unlike a visibly broken appliance or damaged cooking utensil, a detached wire bristle can be difficult to spot. A consumer may finish cleaning a grill without realizing that a small metal fragment has been left behind.
The hazard can persist even after the brush itself has been put away. Food placed on the contaminated cooking surface may pick up the fragment, creating a potential ingestion risk.
Federal regulators reported no incidents or injuries associated with the recalled products at the time of the announcement. The recall addresses the possibility of serious harm rather than a documented series of injuries.
Which Expert Grill Products Are Affected?
The recall covers five products sold under Walmart’s Expert Grill brand, including individual cleaning brushes and a barbecue accessory set.
Affected items include handheld grill brushes, long-handled brushes equipped with scrapers, a three-head stainless steel bristle brush and a 10-piece barbecue tool set.
The products have different designs. Some feature black plastic handles, while others use stainless steel handles. Certain models also include attached metal scrapers intended to remove residue from grill grates.
Prices ranged from approximately $1 to $28, making the affected products accessible to a wide range of shoppers.
Some of the recalled brushes were sold as early as January 2021. As a result, consumers who purchased grilling accessories several years ago may still have one of the affected products at home.
The brushes were manufactured in China and imported by Walmart, which is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Because several brush designs are involved, customers should not rely solely on a product’s appearance to determine whether it is covered. The CPSC recall notice provides model numbers that consumers can use to identify the affected items.

Walmart Responds to the Safety Warning
Walmart has instructed customers to stop using the recalled brushes and has outlined refund options for affected purchases.
In a statement provided to Fox Business, a Walmart spokesperson addressed the company’s response to the federal recall.
“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” the spokesperson said.
“The company has fully cooperated with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the manufacturer of the impacted product to remove it from our stores and notify consumers of the recall. Purchasers of the recalled product are advised to discontinue use and return it to their nearest store for a full refund.”
The retailer is offering a full refund or credit that can be used at Walmart stores or on Walmart.com.
Depending on the instructions provided to customers, affected brushes may need to be returned or discarded. Consumers should follow Walmart’s recall guidance rather than continue using the products.
