Credit card fees are changing as financial institutions review the cost of rewards programmes and customer benefits. For PenFed Pathfinder Rewards Visa Signature Card holders, a long-standing fee waiver has ended, meaning many customers will now face a new yearly charge.
PenFed Ends Pathfinder Card Fee Waiver
The $95 annual fee became mandatory on September 28, 2026, after PenFed removed the option that previously allowed some members to avoid the payment. Customers with the PenFed Pathfinder Rewards Visa Signature Card were previously able to avoid the annual fee through the PenFed Honors Advantage programme.
To qualify for the waiver, members generally needed to maintain a qualifying Access America or Free Checking account with PenFed Credit Union. Members connected to the US military could also receive the waiver under previous rules.
The change applies to both existing and new cardholders, with the fee charged during the next billing cycle.

Card Benefits Remain Available Despite Fee Change
The Pathfinder card continues to provide several travel-related benefits for members who decide to keep the account. The card currently provides Priority Pass Select Membership, giving users access to more than 1,900 airport lounges, travel experiences and selected dining areas worldwide.
Cardholders can also receive up to $120 toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, along with up to $100 in annual airline incidental credits. Travel purchases can earn between 3X and 4X points depending on the purchase category. New customers may also receive a sign-up bonus of around 50,000 points after spending $3,000 within 90 days of opening an account.
Customers Must Decide If Rewards Match The New Cost
The removal of the waiver changes the value calculation for cardholders who previously avoided the yearly charge. Travel-focused credit cards often use annual fees to support rewards programmes and additional services. For some customers, the available benefits may still justify the cost, while others may compare the card with alternatives that have different fee structures.
NerdWallet previously gave the PenFed Pathfinder Rewards Visa Signature Card a strong review, describing it as a competitive option compared with some higher-fee travel cards. The review also pointed to some limitations, such as changing point values and the lack of a direct cash-back redemption option.
Credit Card Fees Continue To Change Across The Market
PenFed’s update comes as other financial institutions adjust fees on premium credit cards. Some customers have recently seen higher annual charges on other travel cards, including a $195 annual fee increase on a Chase card and a $695 annual fee on a Citi American Airlines card.
For consumers, changes like these make it more important to compare yearly costs with the rewards and services received. PenFed Pathfinder Rewards Visa Signature Card users will now need to decide whether the card’s benefits continue to match their spending habits after the end of the fee waiver.
